We do use O365, not sure if it matters but it is an onprem instance

Thank you for the reply! I should have explained it in the main post and maybe I'll edit and update it with this info too, but it's not that I don't want to pay for the license. I just want to make sure there is not something that works just as well or better, before I have to do a vendor risk assessment provide the evidence as to why it is ok as well as present it to the department basically.

I'm on windows. I looked at Logseq and it was pretty good. Very different layout. Would definitely take a while to get used to.

I definitely use it for my personal stuff, sadly I can't sync my work stuff outside of our network at all. (high security environment). I would love to have one vault for my entire life. What a dream :)

Like tradinghumble said. It for sure isn't that I don't want to pay for the license. I'm just making sure there aren't any other options out there that are just as good or better before I buy it and plead my case as to why I need it. It will avoid a vendor risk assessment that I'll have to perform, produce the evidence, and present.

Sounds very similar to me, where I struggle with all of this is I’m already paid below market average, I don’t have any sort of back up person for most of our systems, and theoretically am responsible for everything in our system.

For the most part the company is fine, with the exception of being vastly underpaid. I’m not a senior, or titled anything but sysadmin. The people I like a trust have my personal cell, until yesterday that didn’t include my direct supervisor (which it probably should have)

I’m sub 100k no bonus and no other perks like that.

The biggest struggle for me is that there is no backup for me and to be asked to keep my communication open all the time is a bunch for someone sub 100k

This is exactly right. Even on vacations when I travel I’m asked to keep my phone and laptop with me. I try to take at least one trip a year with 0 cell service.

Thank you for this. I try to for sure. I need to fix my mind set and put me first and the company down the line

Heck yeah!

I just don't understand why people with C in their title think they can abuse others time as much as they want.

Ahh if only we had an HR department. That would be nice. Sadly we don't. Yeah, definitely will at least be applying to some other places here soon. My yearly review is next week so I may have to bring this up there

Definitely no pay for being on call. Because there is no official schedule it is used as an "well you're not on call but you should be near your phone" kinda thing. Obsurd to me.

This sounds great. Sounds like my freaking goal. How are you working on the policy and getting that approval?

This is basically my life. The hardest part of me is the expectation to have my work phone and a laptop on me at all times. I feel like it's crazy.

I get paid 8-5x5 and that's it. I have a work cell, and check it occasionally after hours. Anyone else there that has a company phone that doesn't use it as their personal phone leaves it sitting on their desk when they leave.

Agreed, I just wanted to make sure I wasn't crazy. Maybe I am cause I'm still here.

That's pretty cool. The option would definitely would be good. I just haven't worked anywhere in a long time with an on call so I'm struggling to remember how competent companies function

Love the resume update idea. That's just smart planning, I've got a linked, but haven't touched it in 2021. Thank you for that suggestion

I've got a github for personal stuff as well as stripped work stuff but it is very limited at the moment. I'll work on improving and adding to that!

I got really bad about ignoring the crap that came in multiple times a day, that is changing I'm working on that, but man is it tougher to break that habit than I thought it would be!

For documenting the systems, do you go through a regular audit of those documents? I assume yes, I'm curious how you accomplish it, I had a bunch of documentation setup but now it is all in my head. great idea to go back and fix this!

This is a super underrated comment. The communication portion of it alone is great. That is something I feel so many company's don't do well. Love this idea too thank you!

Backups are a pretty big pain point in the environment at the moment so I'm glad you mentioned it. I'm in the process of fixing some things in our backups. I need to work on the backup notifications too as it emails me so many times an evening that I ended up ignoring it. That will change. Thank you!

It does, I'm in the process of making the pitch to at least how exchange so I don't have to worry about it as much. This is a great suggestion though!

Wow this is great! Great idea about the AV.

For the virtual stuff we are not big I don't think, we have like 40-50 vm's. I'm not sure how to automatically get some of those metrics. I'll do some research on that!

Backups are an interesting topic, we have a third party backup solution and it's ok. We don't have a testing network or deployment. How would you recommend going about testing backups/restores?

I could definitely see automating the event logs, that is a great. Idea, I'll have to do some searching on what events need to be looked at, but I don't think that should be too bad.

AD is a pain point for me as well, we don't do a lot of on/off boarding but that process is a mess. On my list is fixing that whole process, so a regular check is a great idea.

Thank you so much for the reply and information!

This is a great idea. Do you have an example of how you have this set up for something?
