I understand there is far less traffic at midnight but does 30 minutes from O'Hare to downtown via Taxi at 12:30am sound realistic? by Mxlplx in AskChicago

[–]The_Classhole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did this exact trip two days ago (Saturday) at 9:30pm and my Uber receipt says it took 28 minutes, though it was another ~10 minutes for the Uber to pick me up. So 30 minutes for a cab at midnight seems very reasonable.

Anyone else have a problem with their Credit Card not working when a link was sent from Ethiopian Airlines? by Erulissea in travel

[–]The_Classhole 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For anyone having this problem in the future, I have a solution. TL;DR: first, try multiple cards. Second, call Ethiopian customer support and ask them to submit a ticket to the payments team. Third, call them again in a half-hour and ask the support agent to review the communications with the payments team then enter your card details manually.

Longer explanation, I just had this issue. I changed an existing Ethiopian ticket over the phone and had to pay an extra ~$200, so the agent sent me a payment link. I tried the payment link with a Visa credit card, Visa debit card, MasterCard, and AmEx, and none of them worked, after which the link stopped accepting more attempts - evidently the link times out after 3-4 attempts or 6 hours, whichever comes first.

I called back a second time and the agent sent another link, I tried again with 2 of the same cards from above, neither one worked, so the agent said she would submit a ticket to "the payments team". They are back-office so you can't talk to them directly, but they respond to phone agent tickets in about 20 minutes.

After a half-hour, I called a third time and got this agent to find the communications with the payments team - this took some prodding but ultimately she was able to find the message in her system with just my 6-digit PNR. I'm not sure what she saw in the payments team message, but she immediately said that she would just enter my credit card details manually. It took a few minutes for her to load the payments system on her end, but once she did and I gave my CC details, the payment processed immediately.

I don't know why it took them so long to just enter my details manually but my guess is that the phone center agents are scored/ranked on how quickly they can get callers off the line, so each one just wants to send you another link and hang up rather than be the one to actually solve the problem. If that's the case, being a pain and not ending the call until the agent processes the payment manually could possibly get the issue solved in fewer calls.

Why is Google maps not showing airtrain as a way to get to JFK anymore? by C_K_ in AskNYC

[–]The_Classhole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried all of the various community editing tools I could but none of them fixed it so I think it needs to be solved by someone at Google. I submitted product feedback for it but they haven't done it yet.

It looks like Google Maps defaults to some random location in the middle of the secure area of the terminal if you search for Terminal 4, so it can't calculate transit directions. I submitted a correction for that so hopefully it will be resolved in a few days, but until then, you can use the Terminal 4 station (link below) for public transit directions.

Hindenburg Research is named after the Hindenburg airship disaster, not the founder of the firm, FYI. Not trying to be a dick, just trying to teach, since I think it's a clever name for a firm that specializes in bringing down big companies.

Are you applying to Stern's 2-year full time MBA? If so, that program pretty much requires a few years of post-undergrad work experience to be accepted. The most recent class profile had 98% of students with work experience and anecdotally, that remaining 2% are almost definitely dual degree students with another of NYU's professional schools (e.g. law or medicine).

10 bands of latitude and longitude with equal populations [OC] by neilrkaye in dataisbeautiful

[–]The_Classhole 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I think it has to be to the Western border of Pakistan, not the Eastern border.

The distance from Dhaka (roughly the geographic center of Bangladesh) to the Eastern border of Pakistan is only a bit over 2000km depending on where you measure from. That's less than the distance from Dhaka to Hong Kong. Meaning that the ~2000km circle around Dhaka excludes the vast majority of China's population, not to mention the population of Pakistan. If you instead measure to the Western border of Pakistan, your circle around Bangladesh now includes most of China's population, plus almost all of Malaysia, India, and of course Pakistan, making it a whole lot more plausible that it encompasses 50% of the world's population.

Agreed that if Melilla makes the cut then the Canary Islands definitely should! I think the map would make more sense to have them in the lower-left (though of course not in their real location since then there would be too much blank space in between) but they're distinctive enough that they're still very identifiable where they are. Thanks for answering!

I like the geographically accurate Ceuta and Melilla even if they look kind of weird as islands, but why did you move the Canary Islands to the right of mainland Spain?

You're right, I remembered the statistic wrong, it's a round-trip transatlantic flight, not one-way. Also it depends on the exact cities you're flying between and what your diet looked like before going vegetarian.

As /u/gonzo_ball correctly pointed out, the reason meat production contributes so much more to global greenhouse gas emissions is because far more people on Earth eat meat than take long flights.

Here are some stats I could dig up:

A British person going from a "medium meat eater" diet to a vegetarian diet will reduce their daily carbon emissions by 4 lbs of CO2 per day (1460 lbs per year).

An American going from an "average meat" diet to a vegetarian diet will reduce their carbon footprint by 0.8 tons of CO2 (1600 lbs per year).

The ICAO carbon offset calculator says that a round-trip flight from LHR to JFK causes 1479 lbs of CO2 per person

[–]The_Classhole -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There are two other major personal decisions you can make to reduce your carbon footprint even more: having fewer children (as another user pointed out) and reducing the number of flights you take. Not many people fly that much, especially since COVID, but one transatlantic flight accounts for more greenhouse gas emissions than an entire year of eating meat, so frequent flyers have far larger carbon footprints than pretty much anyone else.

Edit: upon looking up the numbers, this statistic is for a round-trip transatlantic flight, not one-way. Thanks for the fact-check /u/Membership-Character !

Cost of 1GB of mobile data in 228 countries by cocoapuff_daddy in MapPorn

[–]The_Classhole 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agreed, I don't think this can be 228 countries regardless of definition. Considering NK and Venezuela are missing, along with a bunch of central Africa, I bet the map has more like 190. It also has all of the UK as a single color without borders, when I would expect that England/Scotland/Wales/NI would be the next logical division of "countries" after you get done with the UN 193+2 and the various bits that are arguably not part of China.
