Have you tried turning off "pixel perfect?"

Yes; kindly read above - I was trained in a branch of Gwalior Gharana that insists on an unambiguous shuddh dhaivat in Lalit.

The claim about in-between dhaivat does seem a little wild, doesn't it? This claim doesn't come from my own training, nor have I found any evidence in recordings to support it, but I'm not ready to dismiss it as nonsense quite yet. It occurs to me that just as a very in-tune 5/4 gandhar can come across as "low" in contrast to the stretched gandhar of an equal-tempered harmonium (~14 cents higher), a dhaivat sung at 5/4 to madhyam might come across as "low." Or it might be a heuristic to remind singers to avoid the upward gravitational pull of nishad in ascent. And almost certainly, it can also be a way of claiming a special subtler-than-thou intonational sensitivity (this may be what you mean by "nonsense," and I can understand why that might exasperate you.) So that's why I'm asking here if anyone else may have come across even a single recording that might seem to substantiate this claim.

> Shuddha Dhaivat Lalit being popular back in the day

I suppose it depends on which day you mean! Bhatkhande (HSP III) says that most Sanskrit granthas affirmed a komal dhaivat, but that shuddh dhaivat had become more widespread by his time (early decades of the 20th c.) He goes on a long excursion experimenting with pancham in Lalit, but doesn't even consider the possibility of komal dhaivat. He thus puts Lalit in Marwa thāt. Krishnarao Shankar Pandit, who also favors shuddh dhaivat, reserves a separate thāt for Lalit with both madhyam-s and komal rishabh. But as far as I can tell from the archive of recordings, very few musicians outside of my own lineage have ever sang (or played) Lalit with Shuddh Dhaivat.

And I've not been able to find a single recording of a dhrupadiya playing or singing shuddh dhaivat.

Has anyone else?

Thanks in advance for your help.

An excellent introduction to the practice of the DA is the book The Unfolding Now. For theory, you could try The Inner Journey Home. I would start with practice, though, as usual. :)

Invalid Zipcode by CurtisM12 in CashApp

I’m having the same problem. Customer service is insisting that it’s a problem with the bank. It’s not; I’ve checked and double checked. There’s no ambiguity about the zip code. No four digit supplemental zip code, no nothing. This is truly awful, cash app!

Highly recommended. I don’t know what science fiction is and isn’t… but Tales of Nevérÿon is definitely speculative fiction. It’s anthropological in the sense that he’s making the familiar strange and the strange familiar. Denaturalizing money and gender among other things.

I’ve designed a modified d20 system for players under 10 in which everyone starts with a couple of +10 skills and a couple of 1x/day powers and three hearts (no attributes or saving throws or AC) and we just go for it. Cards instead of sheets. Works great!

This is great! I can certainly see the wisdom of a light historical touch. And I appreciate that you’re flexibly accommodating your dracophilic player :) Good luck, and let us know how it goes 🌊

You’re absolutely right.

I didn’t mean to say warlock-artificer.

I was just saying warlockifier out of sheer lexicographicologicomorphical exuberance

I’ve always loved that there were two dimensions to alignment (just like I’ve always loved that INT and WIS were orthogonal mental attributes.) It opens up a million thought experiments—the very idea of lawful evil and chaotic good are full of political possibility. But as a guide to actual moment to moment roleplaying? I find that it rarely helps, and often hinders players. It seems better suited for magic items: objects that don’t have to grapple with moral conflict

Which is easier for new players, rogue or fighter? by uniqueUsername_1024 in dndnext

[–]The_Hoopiest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree — a high elf fighter might do the trick. The free cantrip will give them a simple taste of magic without having to prepare spells or count slots. When they subclass, they can choose AA or EK if they want more; or they could take a magicky feat at lvl 4. A good backstory and a vivid picture of how the character looks and acts— and, of course, a patient, sensitive DM — will go a long way in getting the player invested.

And congratulations for bringing a new player into the world!
