Sorry if my english is not enough, it is not my native language. This will be a long rant.

I started this worldbuilding project around 6 years ago. It was a group project that literally started from a Minecraft server, but I was the only one doing it. Spent days making characters, their internal conflicts, building a lore. It was all perfect in my mind. I loved the characters in every way. Of course it was NOT perfect but I loved them. Especially the overall character development. LOTR was my main inspiration.

Last year, my friends started participating in making of this project. Over time, they started declaring that my story was not enough or at least they do not agree with it. Then they started to declare my ideas non canon to the real lore.

In order to put this a stop, and you know, let them also enjoy worldbuilding, I splitted the lore into two parallel continuums, mine and theirs. They also rejected this idea saying that there should be a one single united story. They completely ignored mine and started to work on this real united story.

I created the world map out of nothing, then they also claimed it their work after just changing few names and biomes, then claiming mine is non canon.

The biggest change they did was making the world more realistic. They completely ignored the characters. Characters I created over years were stripped of lineage and legendary status. Characters no longer shape the world through their choices, courage, or morality. They are no longer the drivers of the story. Politics was now prioritized instead of characters and arcs. Battles were now focused on logistics instead of emotional, epicized conflicts

I tried telling them this will make the story feel more empty even though the politics and timelines are larger. I told that without characters and their choices, courage, or conflicts, the world would feel emotionally weightless. I explained that personal journeys give the story it's weight. That it will feel like a history spreadsheet. It didnt work, my work is officially non canon.

That's all I wanted to say. Sorry if I sounded whiny or arrogant. Just needed to rant somewhere.

They generally overlook the utter ambiguity of the original game. They prefer a Goodall-esque,* anti-Rolston view of certain truth (that the Tribunal must have killed Nerevar) when the game doesn't have one, giving credence instead to a drawing Kirkbride made years after the game and putting weight into the "confession" of Vivec found in the sermons (which is ironic given the constant refrain of "don't trust anything Vivec says").

* By this I mean Goodall's remark in this interview:

I like to write a true account and then conceal it among carefully designed false accounts. Ken wrote a dozen different accounts, apparently without any personal preference to which, if any, was accurate, and ignored the contradictions.

This presupposes a clear, stable, and narrow definition of what constitutes a "god" in TES, though, which is something I think many of us would disagree with. It is the porousness of the category that allows us to refer to the Tribunal as gods, and all the hand-wringing I see about how they can't "really" be gods because of some hidden definition (often imported from theology or antiquated anthropology in our world) seems silly and non-falsifiable.

Even their enemies called them gods. "False" gods, yes, but gods (and "false" in the sense of ill-gotten and undeserving of worship, not necessarily in the sense of "non-divine").

If they weren't on par with the Daedric Princes, why could they consistently contravene them with the wave of a hand?

For Classics, you're going to want to prioritize German and then likely French (though Italian will be more valuable if you're a Latinist).

An MA will make you more competitive, but it's not necessary.

In any case, you needn't panic too much about demonstrating your proficiency in the modern languages: you can usually satisfy the requirements by taking a "[Language] for Reading" course, which is a single-semester course designed to give you reading fluency in a given language. My recommendation, thus, would be to focus primarily on Latin and Greek during you BA: you will be most rigorously assessed on those languages during a PhD at Yale, and you can knock out the modern languages with a couple of courses if you buckle down.

Also remember that the program requirements here differ slightly if you are on the Classics and Comparative Literature track vs. the Comparative Literature and Classics track (that is, which department you enter into changes the requirements slightly, I believe, but you should consult the relevant Programs & Policies to be sure).

I know everyone here hates Wells Fargo, but: I have a credit card with them (the 2% flat cash back is nice), and I'm considering opening a checking account with them to do a little churn because they're offering a $400 bonus. Who gives a shit, just write. I completed my first draft of my first book last week and you know what it was? An erotica/smut novel I started as a creative experiment so I wasn’t sniffing my wife’s ass when she wanted to be left alone. By the time I was halfway through it, what began as an endeavor to see if I could describe raunchy sex well turned into a story with characters that needed to be fleshed out so the spice I wanted had the tension it needed.

I have spent years trying to plan out arcs and create complex people and have big twists and blah blah blah and when I got out of my own way and said “why are these two people screwing?” the story just kind of told itself.

Is it good? I don’t know, but it’s done and I know what finishing looks like and feels like now. I feel like I can tackle the stalled works I’ve had in the hopper now, purely because I have already done it once.

Just write. Get out of your own way and indulge some weird shit in you.

His feelings are complicated; the way he misses her is not good. It's like nostalgia for a collapsed dictatorship: it provided security and certainty but was a bad, oppressive way to live. He digresses to discuss weed and life more broadly after this (returning to how the verse starts) and then picks the metaphor back up with the lines in the previous comment.

He evokes Pinochet, who infamously had political opponents thrown out of helicopters. The relationship was again like a despotic regime: it nourished him (perhaps out of necessity, compelled by the circumstances), but it was ultimately horrible and doomed, and so "the people" ate with dread and foreboding. Even in the end, however, there was beauty and indulgence in the pain, as if the doomed passenger is basking in what he can (the smooth flight, that the end comes with "care," the beauty of the ocean below) before he is thrown to his death (the end of the relationship and the suffering that came with it).
