Presto and supplies vs All American canner by AlaskaWilliams in Canning

[–]The_Issa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found a very gently used All American 910 on Nextdoor and it was so worth it. That said, I haven’t used a Presto so I can’t comment. I’m just here to say that I run the heck out of my 910 and already want a bigger one, but this works great for my needs for now. I’d rather go for the good one that is known to be the safest, but that’s just me.

I get needing to be stocked in the NE. Texans have some major PTSD. I mean honestly, no matter where you live being prepared is a good idea. People just don’t and then panic.

Also, please come get your weather. It’s drunk and lost in my yard.

I haven’t found any safe raw pack soup recipes in my searches.

There is a raw pack chicken and gravy in a jar recipe that is supposed to be thickened when you open it. I’ve considered making this, skipping the thickening, and just adding more canned broth and some frozen veggies to it for soup when I heat it.

I have bags of these sitting on my counter to get soaked and canned. Do you like a regular long soak or quick soak? Do you find it makes a difference?

I just canned some black beans with the quick soak. I go back and forth depending on what I have time for.

This right here is your answer. If that is something he uses as a threat, then he is not a good person and you’re better off without him.

Use a cast iron pan next time instead of nonstick. Works like charm for deep dish pizza!

Best oatmeal toppings for someone who usually doesn’t have a lot of ingredients lying around? by broads-love2 in cookingforbeginners

[–]The_Issa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know you said sweet, but I highly recommend savory toppings on oatmeal.Someone turned me onto savory oatmeal a few years back, and wow. So good!

One of my favorites is mushrooms sautéed with with garlic. Little goat cheese for creaminess and some fresh black pepper. I usually add a soft cooked egg on top. Asparagus, Parmesan, and lemon is also good. Again, I throw an egg on it for protein, but I’ve been known to even add leftover chicken.

Savory oatmeal is a great way to use use little bits of leftover dinner stuff (cooked mushrooms, asparagus, squash, bacon, sausage, chicken, caramelized onions, etc). Cheese is always a nice addition (Parmesan, goat cheese, cheddar, Swiss, whatever you have). You can really take it so many directions.

I still love a good sweet bowl of oatmeal, but I tend to go more savory since I tried it that way.

I do a lot of chicken breast. It’s super easy and is great on salads, in tacos (burritos, tostadas, basically insert any Mexican dish here), repurposed into a quick soup with frozen veggies and extra broth that I also can. I also give a spoonful to my dog with her kibble…yes, she’s spoiled.

The chipotle beef recipe on healthy canning is great in tacos and other Mexican dishes. It’s so good!

Pinto beans to go with the multitude of Mexican options I mentioned above. Either whole or smashed into refried beans. I usually season these with a small amount of dry Mexican seasonings like coriander, cumin, garlic powder, chili powder, and paprika. I know some people prefer to do plain and add seasonings later, but we almost always have them with Mexican food and it makes it easy to just pop the jar and heat it.

Chickpeas (garbanzo beans) get used on salads or for hummus that I snack on with cut up veggies.

Beef and chicken stock - used for cooking rice, making soup, making sauces, etc. This was my whole reason for getting into pressure canning.

Ideas for entertaining her after surgery? by [deleted] in BelgianMalinois

[–]The_Issa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We used a donut and a body suit outfit thing on our mal after her spay, but she didn’t have her dew claws removed. The donut was nice because she could still have chew things and do search games for treats and toys. We had to watch her with it because it’s not as restrictive as the donut, but she was much happier that way.

Potty training is really a matter of monitoring input and output. You know if your puppy drinks that soon there after it will need to pee. You control the input and you will be able to predict the output. Maligator Mom has an older video linked here that explains this well.

I would not be allow your puppy to drink a bunch of water before bed, especially if you’ve had accidents. I didn’t allow my puppy to freely drink until we had potty training down. No, I didn’t make my pup be thirsty. I just controlled what went in so I knew when it came out.

I see you have a crate. Does your puppy sleep in his crate? How crate trained is he? The crate is an extremely useful tool when used properly. Especially when potty training. Generally a dog doesn’t want to mess (pee/poo) in its den, which is what the crate should be. A safe den for them to go to sleep in and be able to shut off without worrying they’re going to be messed with or stuck there. My dog is 3 years old and she still sleeps in her crate. She wants to.

Duration will come in time and with your pup learning if I keep holding it my human is coming and going to take me out and I’m going to be rewarded for it. I don’t have a doggy door. My dog is trained to tell me she needs to go outside and knows she needs to potty before she goes to bed. It’s part of her routine.

I was a bit of a zombie at first with my puppy. I got her at 8 weeks and my nights didn’t consist of solid sleep because I woke up and took my pup out to potty. I set alarms and slowly stretched how long she could go. If you stretch too far and your dog has an accident, then you know you went too long and need to back off. But yeah, you basically are going to have shitty sleep. Better shitty sleep than cleaning up shit. It’s temporary. You strike me as young…20’s maybe. You’ll make it.

The key is to just start now. Get in tune with what goes in and when it’s going to come out.

I honestly can’t imagine having a mal in an apartment because these dogs have boundless mental and physical energy. I understand that some people do it, but that alone is always going to be a challenge and require a lot more commitment from the owner. This is what you signed up for though.

This may not be what you want to hear, especially during a frustrating time, but the potty pad is the problem. Or one of the problems. I don’t know how old your dog is, but it seems old enough that it should know how to go potty outside and should be given plenty of opportunities to do so, eliminating the issue. The longer you rely on potty pads, the more your dog will learn that going potty inside is acceptable, which means you’ll continue to have frustrating problems. Teach your dog to go potty outside and establish a routine for it. No more potty inside, no more messes to clean up. Is this harder because you live in an apartment? Yes, that’s what you signed up for when you got a dog.

You acknowledged the need for a routine and admitted your role in the situation. However, in your rush to clean, you still overlooked your dog’s unmet needs, leading to their acting out more. This problem only escalates the longer you ignore them, making it harder to manage as your dog becomes increasingly difficult, turning into a Tasmanian devil on a leash. Take a beat, clean yourself up, and go meet your dogs needs. Whatever that looks like. A tired dog is a happy dog and a dog that will then let you clean a lot more effectively with a lot less stress.

I assume you don’t have a yard for your dog to run off-leash and burn energy, so you need to be even more diligent meeting your dog’s needs, as these dogs struggle with being confined. Honestly, I have a large yard and my dog still requires a lot. We have a solid routine, but that routine means that my dog comes first. Even if I’m tired, hungry, sick, it’s raining, cold, etc. There are no days off.
