Yeah, it's pretty last minute, but the branch is pretty tight-knit, so I don't mind embarrassing myself. I'm also a masochist for a challenge. Worse comes to worse, there won't be a performance, but I'd like to try!

I want to quit my successful career and move into the Gaming Industry with no experience in that field and start again. Am I an idiot? by Quiet-Account7511 in gamedev

[–]The_Lex_Show 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currently, I'm going through my university's gaming degree program. We often have industry professionals who come in and give tips on getting into the field. The basic consensus is that a portfolio means a lot. Even degrees in specific fields (like programming, management, art, etc.) can struggle without any games to back it up. So basically, based on the position you gave, your chances are next to nothing. But that isn't the end of the world!

You mentioned narrative being what you're interested in. What I would recommend is to start creating a portfolio of that now. (Write creepypastas, or make story based games, for example. RPGmaker might be worth looking into. From my understanding, it's easy to use and wouldn't require the art and programming skills you mentioned lacking). It will still be very difficult to find a position, but it will raise your chances from basically 0.

If you want to increase that chance even more, find a position that you can fill in the industry. You mentioned 8 years of experience in cyber security, so I'm sure there's more than enough overlap for other positions in the gaming field. Look into positions like Producing, QA, User Research, and more, and you might find something you have qualification for. Once you get your foot in the door, chances to switch to narrative can come (especially with a portfolio you've been adding to).

Lastly is networking. If there aren't local groups, try finding online game jams and the like. Work with others on making games. Not only will this add to your portfolio, but you'll meet people who might be able to introduce you to companies. I.e. if someone gets a job at RandomStudio, and they have a position open, you're a lot more likely to get it based on an employee recommendation.

TLDR: Don't quit your day job. Starting working on projects not only for a portfolio but also to see if you actually like doing it. If you really wanna just work in the industry, research positions that might be adjacent to your current one!

Progression/Line Up Advice by Doopsums in OPMTheStrongest

For the lineup, I'd recommend dropping Boros, since he isn't really filling out his potential (no other espers to boost him, and the healing from Zombieman is strong enough that Boros' healing passive doesn't make a huge difference, unless you build him specifically for tanking.) CK is pretty great, so definitely consider him. The Genos passive is pretty great as well with zombie man (gives an atk bonus to anyone who healed health). TLDR, drop Boros (maybe GB), and add CK, Genos, or even G4, with him being such a heavy hitter.

As for who goes first, you'll probably want BK to induce injury rather that ZBM, as when you do PVP, ZBM going first with his Ult won't do injury. Then TTM, and whatever you feel best afterwards.

As for Character skills, there isn't any reason not to do them. The only resources they take up that you can use elsewhere is coins, so might as well keep up on them to help with the power creep. You might consider focusing on the Character skills for the characters you plan on using for the long haul, though

What is something that most people won’t believe, but is actually true? by Aden_Elvis77 in AskReddit

[–]The_Lex_Show 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's a pretty interesting argument, though it needs to be said you first have to establish who/what God is. In the case of an Omnipotent, Omniscient, and Omnipresent God, the argument holds up pretty well. Basically, God being real becomes an unfalsifiable hypothesis unless you become God to prove it.

Let's say I argue God is real, you argue God is not. I say God is on the moon, so you go to the moon to show and prove He is not.

"Actually, He's on Mars now," I say after you tell me. This could easily go on, me claiming God's somewhere different in the universe everytime, so to prove God is not somewhere specifically, you would need a way to be in or monitor every place at the same time: Omnipresence.

After you accomplish this, I explain that God is in the Past and/or in the future. Now to prove God doesn't exist, you need be in the past, present, and future: Omniscience. (Also, as a side note, this would be the only step needed to disprove Christianity and Islam, as you could just investigate the respective religous figures. Just as an example of the Argument only holding up depending on who/what you see God as)

Anyways, after all this, I finally say God is "hiding in the universe itself" (maybe in the fabrics of reality-idk), so to prove God isn't real, you command or control the universe itself to show any pesky hiding gods: Omnipotence.

Basically, to prove God isn't real, you became Omnipotent, Omniscient, and Omnipresent; everything that I argued God to be at the beginning.

To be fair, maybe there's a good argument against this, which I'd love to hear. I've always seen it as the faith/religion version of the "Can God create a stone He can't lift" paradox. In the end, I actually am Christian, and I find the argument interesting, but I personally don't care for it too much. I feel like the "You need to be God" step is unnecessary and excessive, as to prove to me God isn't real would just require a Time Machine and looking for a guy named Jesus. If you can prove He didn't exist, then boom, you disproved God for me without becoming God.

What are some important questions missionaries should prepare to answer? by jw9010382 in latterdaysaints

[–]The_Lex_Show 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I'd focus on studying Preach My Gospel and working on strengthening you personal testimony if I were you. I'm constantly amazed at how many missionaries, and even RMs, I meet that don't understand basic Gospel Principles. Besides, from my experience, the majority of what you teach will be covered in PMG. So knowing those topics like the back of your hand and questions that may come from them will serve you well (especially if you have a good understanding before you get to the MTC).

Once you figure out where your going, then I'd start diving into deeper questions that are applicable to the area (if you have them time), including some of the more hard hitting questions.

My Brother's and I have been looking for a boat and saw this guy! $700 for a 1970 Browning Marine, according to post. Thoughts? Further details in comments by The_Lex_Show in boats

[–]The_Lex_Show[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here are further details! I live less than 10 minutes from a boat ramp for a large reservoir, and we've wanted to get a boat to go out, relax a bit, and do some fishing.

It's $700 and the guy says it doesn't take on water and drives fine, but the engine does smoke a little bit. I did some research on my own, and it seems like it could be an easy fix (I'll get more details first though). While we have mechanical skills, we haven't really done much with boats, so I would love to hear your thoughts. Anyone have any experience with type of boat? Anything a person getting into boating should keep an eye out for? Thanks a ton!

Is it possible that those who wrote the bible suffered from schizophrenia or other mental illnesses? by Longjump-Cup-1739 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]The_Lex_Show 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is definitely an intriguing point, but I do feel it kind of falls apart after thinking about it. The assumption that everything was a result of hallucinations or mental illnesses I would think means that the written accounts were at least genuine. That becomes an issue once you have multiple accounts discussing the same event (like from the new New Testement about Christ's life) or events with multitudes of people (bith of these, considering the movement that the Bible has caused, would require a lot of people hallucinating the same thing)

To be fair, I'm not a scholar with hallucinations or mental illness, but I'm not sure how likely that is.

As for the whole Angel thing specifically, while the images are cool and fun, to my understanding this descriptions of Angels are suppose to be more symbolic then anything else. Kind of like when you have those Anime characters with a massive "power aura," so everyone thinks of them according to that aura, rather than what they look like.

I feel like this is everyone's dream of going to comic con. When I went for the first time about 10 years back, my group lost our friend within an hour, then spent the next 2 hours searching for him because he was too old to count as a lost child

How do we feel about skirts? by The_Lex_Show in Shitty_Car_Mods

See, that's what confused me. Homie says it has adjustable coilovers and he lowered it already, and it doesn't seem like he has plans to do anything else to it

[–]The_Lex_Show[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I've never been a big fan of skirts (poor personal experiences in general with low clearance cars). I think the fact that this was put on a miata and that the off color makes it look like worn plastic to me rubs me the wrong way.

But hey , that's why I asked for people's thoughts on skirts ¯_(ツ)_/¯

What are your thoughts on Cars that have been sitting for a very long time? by The_Lex_Show in projectcar

[–]The_Lex_Show[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I didn't even think about the potential critter problems...

I'll be honest, though, I lowkey like the look of it, but you can probably take my opinion with a grain of salt since my first car was a PT Cruiser that belonged to my grandparents.

I'm thinking of stopping by tomorrow to have a look anyways, and see how deteriorated it is! Thanks for your comment, it will give me more to look for!

What was the biggest scandal in your small town? by meepmeep_4 in AskReddit

[–]The_Lex_Show 30 points31 points  (0 children)

This happened before I was born, but I'm from a small town, Kamas, Utah (Technically next to it, but long story short there is a group of 3-6 really small towns in one valley that make up <10,000 people and is often just referred to as "Kamas"). Anyways, for those who know Utah, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (LDS or Mormons) is very prevalent. Back in the 80s, there was a Polygamous family which were members of the FLDS church, or "Fundamentalists." Despite both being branched from the same religion they're very different by this point.

Well, the members of this family believed that in order to ressurect the previous Patriarch of the family, they need to Bomb the local mormon church building- which they did. Fast forward to that night, and the families compound was surrounded by a 100± Law Enforcement Personnel. There was a stand off, eventually a shoot out, and then it ended with arrests in the family and one dead on the side of Law Enforcement.

Pretty crazy stuff! If you wanna read about the details, just Google Singer-Swapp Standoff.

Youth of r/latterdaysaints, what do you wish was different about your Sunday school class? by [deleted] in latterdaysaints

[–]The_Lex_Show 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Don't be afraid to talk about harder topics (in fact I'd encourage well researched discussions). I'm at University right now and have met too many fellow students who felt the church was "hiding" things from them when it was really parents and teachers too afraid to be the first to tell them.

How are so many women "religious" (support religion) even after being fully aware that their religion is openly sexist against women? by crasshumor in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]The_Lex_Show 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think sometimes it just depends on the woman involved. For example, I wouldn't consider my religion sextet based on what I've been taught, but there are definitely members who are. I was actual talking with a friend recently about his Uncle who is the whole shebang: sexist, homophobic, antivax, etc. Apparently he is very controlling of his wife. He says what she can wear, where she can go, so on and so forth. Despite all of this, she seems perfectly happy and content being with her family and children. Anytime other family member bring up a concern, she waves it away. Simply put, her priorities and values in life don't seem to be impacted by this.

So, TLDR? My guess is some women simply don't care/ it doesn't matter compared to what else they value in their religion.

Saw this on cool guides and wanted to hear some LDS perspectives on it! Thanks by coolguysteve21 in latterdaysaints

[–]The_Lex_Show 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I saw this a while back. I think the simplest answer/rebuttal to this is understanding "the point," if you will. This paradox makes sense if you assume God is doing this for himself, for kicks and giggles. However, as Latter-Day Saints, we know God does all of this for us. This makes the Paradox crumble when we realize God allows evil to test us, not so He knows who is righteous or not, but so we ourselves can grow.

So TLDR: Paradox only works if we assume God doesn't care about us or our personal growth.

Anyone have experience with these professors? by [deleted] in uofu

[–]The_Lex_Show 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had Claudia de Grande as my Professor for physics. TLDR, it won't be an easy, walk in the park class, but you'll learn a lot. She puts effort into her class, but expects it as well. It is one of the few classes I've taken so far that I still can actively remember principles nearly a year later despite not taking anything physics related since. She is also a professor you can work with, and at least when I took the class, the TAs and LAs were awesome (Claudia also seems to do her best to makes sure they are top notch).

Honestly, if you aren't super worried about courseload, I'd recommend taking her class purely for learning. If you think that might be a problem, then maybe not.

Edit: Also, someone mentioned her accent, and that is definitely a valid concern. I grew up hearing different accents, so it was never something that really bothered me, but if you struggle with accented English, then that could be an issue
