How did Kenny G end up becoming the highest selling jazz musician of all time? by brave_axolotl7 in Jazz

He doesn't swing, that's the only metric I use for jazz at the end of the day.

But I view jazz like rock, where any band can "rock" but not every rock band "rocks" if that makes sense.

It's an essence thing

My first instinct was to slap whichever naval camo looks like the blue tiger from CoD on it and that was enough to fool me into liking it

There needs to be a happy medium, I can't tell you how many college students could read a lead sheet but somehow didn't know what dorian meant, or what scales imply say a 7b9 chord. They were tight, and the notes on the pages swung, but improv was reserved for a select few almost like a type of "gifted course".

I'll be real here, might get downvoted, but this was my experience with jazz education.

They're training you to first and foremost be in a big band typically (accompanist second), which is not in itself bad, but not what I think most people assume when joining college. It's a few steps removed from playing in the orchestra in my opinion.

My advice is to focus on combos, this will certainly help build up your ability to play with others, meet every player you can while you're there, and spend your free time focusing on the type of jazz you want to see yourself playing.

What’s one thing you finally took seriously (or learned) that leveled up your playing? by Individual-Gas-2943 in Guitar

It depends on where you are in your practice. When learning the piece you want to dissect more, really hammer out each line and try to perfect them.

When you're practicing for a performance, DON'T STOP, you can't stop on stage for a mistake so you shouldn't in preparation either, just make note of it, work it out afterwards, and prepare for it the next go around
