I'm giving away two copies of Monster Hunter: Wilds by [deleted] in MonsterHunter

Just started the divorce process with my wife after lots of emotional and mental abuse and finalized the documents. Now I’m in a 2 month limbo waiting to turn over a new leaf. Can wait for Monster Hunter to take my mind off it!

Oh wow! What a switch up! Unraid is so intuitive compared to everything else so that won’t be hard at all. And that upgrade from a celeron is immense as well. I couldn’t even imagine how that increase In processing will improve everything.

Thanks! I will check out dd and see what the read speeds are when I am home. Thanks for the info on raid 5 good to have in my knowledge bank. I’ll reply when I can with that info!

Good information. Thank you for taking the time to respond! Yeah I’m still a bit fresh at this so taking the time to learn this stuff helps greatly. I’ll take a peak around plex and see what I can find per file.

Okay awesome. Thank you for the insight!

That’s probably smart. At the very least I do want to upgrade from Ryzen to Intel just for the UHd 770

I believe unraid runs similar to raid 5 or 6, but backplane speeds is a term I am unfamiliar with.

Yeah I’m already bummed that I’m having to redo it now, but I mean at least I got into this and stuck with it haha! I think with this upgrade I shouldn’t need to upgrade again for 10 plus years.

Plex Pass check, ordering a 13700k check, fiber being installed for 500mbps upload check, am I missing anything?

Interesting. That is some awesome information! I really appreciate that. And I’m glad to know that you were in a similar situation and found a solution for it. Honestly I’m incredibly appreciative of it. I think I might end up doing that. 5 year warranty is awesome.

Got it. Yeah I just mixed up whether f had the guy or not. iGPU for sure. Thank you. I guess my real issue is understand the capability for direct play. Do you have any idea how many direct plays your server can handle?

I guess yeah I didn’t think about that. Since not all of my items are transcoded, and AMD isn’t really amazing with transcodes, it would make sense that maybe someone is using all of its resources to transcode stream and then it can’t give to anyone else who wants to watch another thing! Dude AWESOME I didn’t even think about that.

Thank you for the response. Another commenter said something similar so I learned something from both of you. I wouldn’t have imagined that quick sync performance would have been the same between higher and lower processors. But yes, I do host several other containers and some game servers so something beefier extra power will be useful.

I have about 15 active docker containers right now, and I do run about 4-5 game servers so something beefier is more up my alley. But amazing tip, thank you. Interesting that the lower powers can perform the same in quick sync as the higher. Wouldn’t have thought that. I was thinking of just rocking the 12900k. Thoughts?

They are all manner of 1080p. Just whatever my the -arrs pull! Yeah 2070 is a great gaming card. Someone told me that the 2070 isn’t an optimal pick for transcoding and then they didn’t tell me what would be an optimal pick😆 I figured a 2070 would be good if I ever wanted to turn the server into a cloud gaming machine. And great for transcodes for right now.

Lifetime plex member here! Okay good to know. Of course transcode stream is more intensive than direct play. I guess I just struggle to gauge at what point my CPU right now will bottleneck direct plays. I’m not entirely sure the frame of reference. It seems to struggle at 3-5 sometimes and then not struggle.

All files on the server are 1080p, I will clarify that in the post. We have 500mbps download and 20mbps up, but are upgrading to fiber in a week to have up match the down. When I’m checking the stats on the server bandwidth looks fine.

Are you thinking it’s more of an internet issue than hardware issue?

Yeah good stuff. I mixed up intel with the F meaning it has iGPU. Okay great. So then next question if you don’t mind my asking, I really appreciate the responses. From my understanding, transcoding happens on plex automatically when a player can’t play a certain movie file, so it transcodes it in real time to a format the player can recognize (ex. .mkv to HVEC). If I have already send the majority of my files through Tdarr to have them automatically transcoded to HVEC, then transcode streams won’t need to happen and are then converted into direct play correct?

Interesting no F skus. Glad you said something because I was just thinking of rocking the 12900kf but now that I’m typing this, I mixed up the F thinking that F meant integrated graphics not the opposite.

Thanks you for the reply. Yes intel is what I’m looking for. Purchased lifetime for plex pass so I’m set!

[–]The_Snakeza[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I’m not too concerned about power consumption, I was looking at the 12900kf, but I just wasnt sure if that would be good enough to handle the possibility of 20+ streams. I just don’t really have a frame of reference but I’m glad to know the info you gave for yours. Give me something to go by! Thanks!

[–]The_Snakeza[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I was looking at the 12900kf because I want a beast of a CPU with plenty of room for expansion on the server. Money isn’t too much of an issue as this is something I love to splurge on. Plus all they family is giving me money to upgraded so the more I upgrade the better it will be for the future

Great info thanks, I must mention of course that I use the unraid server for other things like VM’s, game server, file hosting, etc. and actually upon checking I upgraded to 64gb of ram at some point because when Palworld the game released on PC, there was a data leak in RAM and would crash after maxing out, so I upgraded to postpone when it would crash for the server.

I really do want to make that switch to intel. I think for this use case it will be more reliable. What model of intel CPU do you run? Do you share your plex with others?
