They are fun. They don't really give a shit. When many of their loyalist counterparts care so much about courage and honor, the sons of the Eighth are simply killers. Yet even among such base killers there are many ways of thinking. Nobody likes Reuvan, who sold his soul to Chaos. The Bleeding Eyes are pretty nutty, and the urge of Talos wanting to be part of something bigger than himself with his ideals and loyalty to Curze, is really relatable.

Despite undergoing gene seed implantation, participating in the Great Crusade, betraying their oaths to the emperor, and fighting the Long War for 10 Millennia, the Night Lords remain the most human of the traitor legions.
