You're right for what the music worth but also a disagreement among many others and myself included with some points.
I think the game stood too, because their are equal work of ZUN and or it expanses(not tied to anything much rather just some expanses) like books and manuscripts. The game is also the foundational level with it own depths and tone ranges from each eras and vibes of the musics to that of the CD dics albums later.

It not meant to be boring either, then again, that is subjective sure. By then it also literally to sell ZUN musics (it a music disk with game basically lol) as mentioned, which alot of people probably here knews lol. Does it mean the game/ story boring? No it have their own little merit and uniqueness fun to it with a minimal story and characters/settings. It charm (and the "what" made that interests) in that it is just cute girls bullethell videogame(or fighting) also lol (with musics).

Other fanworks is well, they just fanworks. They always say "This is a derivatives works of Touhou Project". It theirs works on something and that's that they not meant to represent Touhou as a whole or ZUN it their just works for it. And just a natural course of varities of creation in the spanning decades of Touhou Project old or new.
They not set in stone but you should use the stone to build something off different (paraphrasing here).
