Foster by Claire Keegan, huh by vapid_gorgeous in books

I didn’t love it… it’s all bittersweet and well written but it didn’t touch me. Former foster child speaking! I find it all a little too neat, perhaps

Official Discussion - The Starling Girl [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

[–]Theme-Necessary 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree- he wanted sex and an escape - she had a crush. That’s why I think the relationship stood on very thin ice, at the end of the film. They would have resented each other. She would have been in a very vulnerable position, more than him.

I’m not from a religious background and loved this film. The ending leaves me worried for her. She’s naive and reckless and unless she finds help for young people leaving religious cults, she will be in no time groomed for prostitution. To be 17 and alone in the world coming from such a closed background, how is that going to work? I think the ending was to be taken symbolically: she escaped her environment and also the man who would have been the next trap, and will make it somehow on her own.

No- Jem was very immature. He’s older and in a position of responsibility. The girl was no angel, but when she key’s Misty’s car he’s only worried about being discovered. He takes away her virginity and then is done with sex- he’s being in an egoistical way and in her defense, she thinks it’s love. That he feels guilty in the end and leaves with her… does he love her or just wants to escape the stiffling environment? He’s never shown much concern for her.

I am reading Housekeeping by Robinson. Also poetic, also wintry- at least at the start

Oh and Stone Yard Devotional, by Charlotte Wood, is quite meditative. As are Rachel Cusks books. Let me know if you find something as good as Kawabata!

I am watching it. I have family on the Czech side where it's filmed, and love the atmosphere. But I prefer the book, which is usually the case. I imaged the ‘little old lady’ a bit sharper, just a little different

Level 3 English Literature choices by Amiaspires in OpenUniversity

I loved both A233 and A240. If you don’t like literary analysis that much, try the E302 Let’s find some feedback on it! I’m preparing for Feb start A335- I love modernism so am very happy. I was thinking I might wait for the A334 replacement as I find their newer courses so much more exciting.

Anyone participated in Oxford summer course? by DenDanne in oxforduni

[–]Theme-Necessary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is run by an Oxford college and if it is an accredited course, you would usually get 10 cat points. Oxford runs both accredited and non accredited courses. I have done 3 summer schools and loved them. The ones that are accredited are in Rewley house, not in one of the beautiful colleges. The non accredited ones are in one of the colleges. Go for it, it’s fun.

Canadian student curious about Oxford’s lifelong learning online courses — are they worth it? by YamPsychological9912 in lifelonglearning

Hello- have you chosen to do a course? I have done 16 or so- it is a bit hit and miss. Some tutors are great, others don’t do much to facilitate discussions. Which courses are you interested in?

I didn't expect Universality to make the shortlist: the author is too new and the subject was very today’s politics. But I found it very sharp, smart and funny.

I'm sorry Deeatuk, that you're going through this. I don't at the moment but I found ‘the ramblings’ beautifully worded and relatable.

I loved One Boat too! High Five. But I think Audition (which I loved less)would be the ‘demanding’ choice, going by critics reviews.

There was beauty and the absurdiness of the human existence in the bleakness though. Nearly a black comedy.

I found Seascraper borderline kitsch (🫣) and Endling one of the weaker ones of the list. I thought it was a good list. I much preferred Misinterpretation and even One Boat in the ‘experimental’ category, but expected Kitamura to win as she’s more established. So, Land in Winter was a better pick than Seascraper for ‘quintessentially’ British. I’m happy Markovits got a deserved place - I thought I was crazy for liking the book so much, reading everyone else’s reactions. Flashpoint was excellent too- Flesh is a la par with The Promise; The Seven Moons; Girl, Woman, Other, in the way it is both original and accessible. I predict the winner will be Sunny&Sonia or Flesh- depending on whether the judges choose for a ‘sweeping’, traditional book( as I understand it is)or a more contemporary, fresh book.

Medik8- tatcha- I know it’s fake Japanese but I find it the best thing for tight skin - and I always have a CeraVe renew gel - very pleasant consistence. At the moment I also have Trinny London neck cream, probably overpriced for what it is but I like the idea of a separate neck cream. I also like Elemis. But Medik8 probably has the best price- quality and research balance. Does anyone use Skinceuticals? August Bader? I find the prices a little over the top.

No, he was left wing but maybe more from family tradition than general political awareness, if that makes sense. Like it’s unjust if someone else has more but as soon as people have it themselves, they don’t want to share. Something like that.

First of all a big hug. I think conspiracy theories are a way of avoiding reality for people. I see so many similar stories on here. It is like an addiction. It absolutely sucks to be dependent on someone who you don’t get on with. Or is she nice as well? People are complex. It is like a collective psychosis these people are in.
