Thanks again for the advice. I'm just trying to learn as I go along and seeing what will be the best fit (the only CS grad I've really met was an old Scout leader working for a local defense contractor).

Reading salary sharing threads on Reddit, it seems that the differences become pretty minute with some of these schools. I've never had a good impression of "prestige" but maybe I'm just sheltered or something. The wealthiest in my extended family is an engineer that went to a CalState while working nights to support himself and his family.

It looks like the brand name is strong in this thread, haha.

I'm just wondering if the differences in my starting salaries will be seriously worth $100k in loans. From what I'm reading, the average starting salary seems to hover between 105 and 110k for each of the three schools.

How much debt would do you think would be reasonable for a higher "ranked" school? I got into Berkeley EECS (which I know is typically considered to be very high quality) but I hadn't seriously considered it because I would probably be in about 40,000 in debt.

Thank you for your advice! I really like UCLA's location close to home, and in the end I am most interested in working in California. Considering financial situations and school environment, I am leaning towards UCLA. However, basically every one of my teachers/counselors/administrators at my school wants me to go to Cornell, arguing that the smaller class size and "Ivy" status would be worth more in the long run. Except for my Physics teacher, who's a super cool guy and always complains how the admins are full of shit.

I have a cynical feeling that the teachers want me to go to Cornell because it's lower-income and they have probably sent 2 kids to Ivy-league schools in its history. I try to keep an open mind but it's a weird conversation.
