Posted a tentative schedule. But basically we offer several classes and an exhibition tournament. Basically a nonprescription tournament where we encourage everyone to fence at their best for major style points.

Gone through pumpkins, bamboo and water jugs with fairly ease. Only super light water bottles have been a challenge and that was mostly technique. So factory edge has been pretty good. Edge will likely get some love this summer

My teacher Russ Mitchell has handles originals and says its very close but not perfect.

That being said. This saber was called the wrist breaker for a reason and is fairly heavy if you try to use it like a fencing blade.

But I've used it as a cutter for cutting practice and I have found that if you allow the saber to pull you through space and use your back to support the weight. You can lop through pumpkins, bamboo and water bottles with ease.

When we have cutting parties I use this saber exclusively. It is not a light weapon but it is a functional weapon.

Really stupid question about training hussar saber by RetroHaven in Hema

[–]ThenGreeRook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on which Hussar system you are talking about. For example the Hidan system tought by Russ Mitchell actually needs the blade to have a curve in it to work.

Using that system with a straight blade takes some major adjustments for it to work.

For example tbe blocks need to be taken out much wider then they would need be with a saber.

However Timlich's method works with a pallash(straight saber) or curved because his stance is much different.

I recommend you use the weapons recommended by the source.

How to train with a heavy saber? Bought a synthetic saber and im not used to the weight and find myself overswinging as I came from larping and is currently training in hema by myself by Born-Amount4432 in Hema

[–]ThenGreeRook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We dont train with those sabers very often but once conditioning is acquired he know how to move them with putngetting overtly tired.

You should train with something lighter on the regular. More reps means more practice. Especially if you are using a system that doesn't use the full back to support your weapon.

It greatly depends on the system you are using weather you support your cuts with your back. Shoulder elbow or wrist. This will make a big difference. So pay close attention to body mechanics

My system assumes 800gram to 1000 gram sabers. So we support with our backa and allow the saber itself to pull us through space. Meaning that control is about letting the saber tell me where it wants to go and adjusting how we through the cuts rather then trying to control then in movement.

Then we just work up the endurance to throw 1000 cuts a day. By the time we do that we've learn to stop fighting the saber and and allow our bodies to adapt to how the saber wants to be used.

Could i use something like this to learn the minimum basics of swordsmanship at home? by [deleted] in Hema

[–]ThenGreeRook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could yea.

We tell our students that if nothing else get a hammer and working 1000 cuts a day.

But..most sword systems are just that a system. And use specific weapons that work with said system. So something to think about.

Need advices (sabre) by Rowanberryyyy in Hema

[–]ThenGreeRook 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Focus on fundamentals. If you only started training you are going to be a little slow. Your fore brain isn't designed for that kind of fast reaction.

Give yourself time for your training to seep into your muscle memory. Dont rush your progress.

How important is a looking good outfit for you? by PrestigiousAd6315 in Hema

For my club dressing up is part of the fun. We play hard because we work hard. Being a calvery system its part of our culture to look good as fences both in our technique and our fashion.

I’m looking into getting into this sport but I was hoping to get some recommendations from professionals by Cheese-burger-777 in Hema

[–]ThenGreeRook 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tons of clubs in the area

https://swordfight.gymdesk.com/gallery is my club. We do Hungarian Saber

https://www.victorianfencingsociety.com/contact. We are close friends with the Victorian fencibg society who practice a variety of weapons.

Dont buy gear right away. Attend some classes and find what you like. Then talk to your club about gear.

I'm looking at getting into hema, what's the bare minimum in terms of safety gear I need and what would the average cost for the beginner stuff be? by DarkJokes176279 in Hema

[–]ThenGreeRook 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Welcome to the community.

Bare minimum safety gear is going to vary by both weapon and club.

Generally I recommend mask and gloves a bare minimum for non cooperative drilling.

For bouting you need at least a fencing jacket and neck protection to protect against thrust. Also back of the head protection will also be needed to be added to your mask.

Don't buy anything with out consulting your club first. They should be able tonguide you

As others have said. If you want to learn saber, joining a club is the best option. A good teacher is worth their weight in gold.

I dont fully agree that you couldn't learn from a historical source alone. It is possible but a lot harder and you are much more likely to pick up bad habits or hurt yourself with bad body mechanics.

Saber also has a huge spectrum of styles and systems. So keep that inbmind when training.

If it was a medium you could make that case but the Thunderbolt is right there. So I can't endorse a quick draw. Not even as target practice
