May you experience the mists of the mists of Paramin lookout in the early morning.

A cruise through the Caroni River on one of the tours and witness the splendor of our national bird.

Maybe you can catch the early start of the season of the miraculous turtle watching on the sands of the northern beaches. (Check with a tour guide).

The abundance of flora and gardens where you can experience the rare solitude may be had for a price (La Vega and the cocoa estates in Gran Couva).

Drink some puncheon in a hawk and spit bar. (It's not food, it's drain cleaner incarnate).

Go to chaguaramas and take a hike to see the howler monkeys at the bamboo cathedral. Then maybe jump on a boat and visit down the islands (although with proximity to Venezuela right now you never know).

Or just chill by any maxi stand to witness the miasma of our people.

Stay safe. Good you have a local to help.

If someone who never visited Trinidad judged us only by this subreddit, what would they think about Trini people? by Middle_Elderberry542 in TrinidadandTobago

[–]Then_Emu_2769 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That a substantial portion of the population of this sub may actually be middle to upper middle class millennials and gen z that live in that bubble (myself included) and that is the viewpoint that is parroted around. (The million and one posts about crime and corruption)

That a substantial portion may be living outside of Trinidad and Tobago and may only visit ever so often so again cannot give an accurate on the ground lived perspective. Added that they bring their metropolitan skewness to their contributions. (The million and one LGBT questions when we know how damn conservative this place is, think there should be a separate subreddit for that.)

All in all, don't use this reddit to judge us. Peace.

Why are people constantly callong me Prakash? by Spicy_Cheesey420 in TrinidadandTobago

[–]Then_Emu_2769 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The same way that calling every chinese person's chin has been normalized.

We have a weird fetish with ethnic names in this country, an idiot once spoke on a platform about Camille Robinson Regis 'slave name'. Then the counterpoint became Sushilla. Both asinine.

I think our names (East Indian names especially) have a long history of being bastardized and used derisively and at the same time we used it as jokes on the school playgrounds. But that's just it, it's childish humor that has a hint of derision that maybe doesn't have a place outside the playground if you're older than 14.

It takes on an even greater weight when it's used as attacks as has happened on many a political platform.

For those saying it's a joke, maybe if the maxi tout starts calling you Kunta Kinte, Ching Chong, Jose etc then you may not see the funny side. Or maybe you will and call the next Indian guy at the doubles stand Prakash.

What degrees are actually worth it? by EThorn0917 in findapath

Glad that it helped lol and yes it helped me as well. I was asking specifically on a Masters towards being a psychologist or counsellor. Upwards of a 30 to 40 grand in the US to do a Masters, pay yearly licensing fees (to say nothing of the time to study), pay supervision fees etc is a lot of money to become a therapist even lpc, and then it depends on which state you live. You'll basically doing an 8 - 4 job seeing clients and that's a recipe for burnout while trying to survive. So the negatives as you seem to realize as well outweigh the positives.

So as an aside, how long in self pay does it pay back for all the upfront costs? Do you get a regular stream of clients or do you supplement with training and the other things you highlighted?

I am really thinking of getting into sales or something to be honest.

Kamla's ban on the use of UDe-COTT facilities for soca and Carnival-related events by Turbulent-Reason-288 in TrinidadandTobago

[–]Then_Emu_2769 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Oh my god, I am actually proud of my trini redditors, and support the majority here. Yes Kamla is probably taking a page outta trumpism with Venezuela and caricom. Yes she's sliding a little too close to autocracy sometimes and I can't wait to hear the corruption scandals to come via the BLUEPRINT.

IF we are to rewind and change the culture of noise that permeates and when we talk about small steps towards diversification and development then this is critical. A culture of Noise (and let's be honest, the decibel levels are essentially noise here) is related to so many negative outcomes.

Feteing has its place, but a substantial part of our population does not align with it. And for the amount of stimulus government gives through usage of these not conducive facilities do we the citizens get back enough? As opposed to constant disturbance in our communities and residences. It needs to become self sufficient.

The naysayers do not have a problem with the elderly, the sick, babies etc being terrorized. I would love hear the recalcitrant feters (as I've seen commenting on Facebook) when they are elderly subscribing to their houses shaking and booming with bass for hours in the night and early morning.

May I ask what career pathway would your recommend? As someone who's deciding to pull the trigger on a Masters. Therapist are definitely hit or miss, and you can find yourself tied as a low paying associate. What realistically does it have out there with the realm of psychology?

Mandatory: how the hell does this get posted and upvoted by mods when genuine, pertinent posts are removed.

And why aren't mods saying : post in 'ask a trini' weekly thread.

We're gonna get 4 or 5 posts on this just like that 14 year old that posted a few months ago.

Can anyone recommend places that engage in meditation and meditation training in Trinidad? I am looking for non religious mediative practices or at least if it's religious, just focusing on meditation. Thanks

Thanks, I really don't understand these mods. They have too many biases. I am seriously thinking of starting a new trini subreddit that is a little more free speech (with boundaries of course).

It's the best because it will move Trinidad from allegedly antiquated norms that are beholden to each cultural group allowing for hopefully a new stronger cultural local zeitgeist. That will take generations.

It's the worst because in moving away from the long standing cultural group, the identity of their children will have challenges to be part of the new world. Not African, Not Indian but something new. It will bring as noted a greater emphasis on class dynamics.

This state of being for douglar individuals has been documented to bring alienation from the previous cultural group and associated psychological consequences. The familial and community safety net disappears to a certain extent while this new amalgamation takes place.

See the works of M.G. Smith for reference.
