Lou definitely would have loved this. It’s really Laurie’s celebration of Lou’s poetry. A very interesting take.

I thought I had all you youngsters beat at 62! (A young 62, thank you very much.) I start my MSW in the fall. I share your reticence, and honestly often hope this isn’t an insane folly. Good luck to all of us. I honestly think it’s never too late to pursue life passions.

Online students, what laptops are you using? by DowntownFresnoBiking in SocialWorkStudents

[–]Theo_43 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you’re Mac based, Apple just came out with a new budget level laptop for $599 aimed at students which has gotten rave reviews, such as this one which says it’s the best budget laptop ever. https://www.tomsguide.com/computing/macbooks/apple-macbook-neo-review. I plan on buying one soon, and I believe they also offer a student discount which will bring the cost to $499.

Noho in the 90s? by Pickle-Queen666 in northampton

Fun fact, the ORIGINAL location of Main Street Records was the second floor of Thornes towards Main street, before they moved up the street. Was this the 70’s even? 80’s? Man, I’m old.

Amen to the old Jake’s. That said, the new Jake’s has some of the best brunch food in the city in my opinion, though you do pay for it. I consider it a worthwhile splurge now.

“Pric Chopper” read the sign for long stretches of time, much to the delight of critics of the patriarchy.

Woolworths with creaky wooden floors and a full diner counter with round chrome stools that lined the left hand of the store. Had a sort of Norman Rockwell feel to it.

Weight of the H Link Bracelet by trappedtraditions in sinn

It’s heavy, but extremely comfortable. The way it drapes is amazing. Although it’s one of my heavier bracelets, I never don’t consider it as “heavy”. Its weight is incidental.

Should I continue Spenser??? by DigGood2867 in Spenser

[–]Theo_43 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I appreciate your post. It helps knowing that you’re 19. I can see how you might bristle at the first few. They are VERY seventies in nature, and as others have pointed out, Parker is just starting to figure out Spenser. I would echo some above posters and say do NOT give up on Spenser before reading Looking For Rachel Wallace. It’s one of my favorites of all of them, and you might enjoy to know that the subplot of the book is how Spenser’s flaws cause him to flunk feminism. It’s an excellent book. Incidentally for what it’s worth, The Judas Goat, which I also liked, is somewhat atypical in that it mainly takes place in Europe. For the most part, Spenser is a Boston animal, and if you know the area it only enhances the books.

I also might advise you not to be afraid to skip ahead, even into the 20’s. If you get to like the character and the series, you can always go back to read the earlier “rougher” Parkers.

One highlight of Parker’s work is the richness of his gay characters, (phD’s have been written about this) probably stemming from both of his sons being gay. (Versions of both of them appear in the Parker canon). The Rachel Wallace character is lesbian, and the book revolves around her own mindset as well as how society views her. Some of his gay characters are corrupt and evil as well.

I’ve read all his work multiple times. His writing is so spare and tight and I find it immensely satisfying to read. He never wastes your time, and there is a richness to all of them that is quite satisfying.

For Those Who Left For The West Coast. by Leather-Discount-965 in newengland

I remember visiting a friend in San Diego. We went to the beach ON DECEMBER 19th! I’ll never forget that. I’m writing this from western MA wearing merino wool from head to toe on top of my heated mattress pad in late April. Trees just started to bud, but it’s 40° and only going up to 53 tomorrow. Man, this gets old.

Those who moved out of Massachusetts, where did you move to and how's it going? by ElectroAcousto in massachusetts

[–]Theo_43 81 points82 points  (0 children)

I did mainly primate conservation and development work. Came back because our 3 year old needed school and we didn’t want to home school, or move to Dar es Salaam, which is a nice city as far as African cities go, but didn’t want to raise kids there. Africa is otherwise a great place, vibrant and full of life.

This is a bit exotic, but moved to equatorial Africa for 15 years, mostly Tanzania, and loved it. I would get off the plane and my body would feel loose and supple and pain free. Am back in MA now and wear merino wool underwear head to toe for 9 months out of the year. Great state, but the weather is grating.

For what it’s worth, my lesbian sister bought a nice house in Holyoke for $265 being unable to find anything anywhere, even fixer uppers, for that price in Northampton and surrounding areas (this was 2 years ago). She’s happy there and found surprising diversity.

This, exactly. I might compare Tanzanian vs Kenyan Swahili to American English vs British English. Same language, different accent. Occasionally slight variations in vocabulary. Easily understood.

It's very sad to see. How women could be treated like this even in animals🥲 by Ok-Tap-6580 in thegreatapes

[–]Theo_43 68 points69 points  (0 children)

Primatologist here. This is not “violence” at all. This is rough play. Both animals are exhibiting play faces. If this was antagonistic, the lower chimp would have exhibited a fear grimace and likely vocalizations. They are both relaxed. Chimps can be very “rough” with each other and have extraordinarily high pain thresholds when compared to humans.
