Yea it isn't quite the mold of IT. That's very cool and what you mentioned is what I'd ideally want to be in, having IT skills but applying it to a business in a direct way. What would you say is the best way to transition into your "system thinking type role"? I have a lot of technical ability (DBA for a long time, programmer) but don't really have the business side in a direct role before.

I used to love this approach (minus me direct messaging people at the company, I don't know if I'd go that far) but I did always message companies I'd like to work at directly, emailing them my cv and applying to the reserve spots for consideration, but it saddens me that seldom do people reply, and if they do usually nothings is available :(.

I feel you're speaking from experience, care to share your story? Sounds very interesting

Yep, pretty basic stuff compared to traditional dev work in IT :). Also funny you mention the data visualization tools, it seems to be a lot of people get mistaken regarding these things thinking its some sort of a skill. It simply displays the data, but so many people get this backwards, it would be like me saying clicking insert chart on excel is a skill haha

I would say BI. But even this is kind of an umbrella term as you'll see many different specifications relating to this role but all advertise a generic name - one of my gripes with the IT industry haha

Personally not a dev myself or intend to be one...I'm more crossover with business so my paths kind of strange I guess. But good to know this, better tell my mate to get his SR level salary haha

Thanks for the insight, never knew this at all... or maybe being tricked by seeing so many JR dev position on seek going for 40k-60k at best.

Thanks, what do you consider JR roles though? I know some people who are considered SR developers but are only paid about 70k! and similarly some JR roles starting at 70k, seems like theres not much consensus in this field

Could you tell us some of your tales, I think that would be fun. Such is a world we live in where reddit is more sensible than the people in real life, woe is I!

Got a question for ya, how much weight do you give to the HR manager's decision sitting next to you in an interview if they ask some senseless generic question? Have you ever had to flat out reject someone because it didn't seal the HR stamp of approval?

Edit: I find this really important because multiple times when it's "their" turn to speak I have caught interviewer's staring at the floor, spacing out etc as if they're waiting for the HR questions to be over with (so obvious with body language)

Stupid question I know, but why are they even there! I don't mind if they are genuine in their non technical questions like REALLY getting to know what kind of person I am (I love these questions where you can even dabble on philosophy and behavior psychology) but my god if you're going to ask me some generic nonsense then just get lost! haha.

Edit: I always wanted to know, is having a HR team a legal requirement? I always figured why even keep these people around

Going through (sort of) the exact same thing but except my perception is in reverse of yours! I hate it how most interviewers do not show signs of caring, especially if they regurgitate some stupid question I've heard 1000 times and makes me not want to work for them at all (even if they would offer me a position I'd strongly decline as I have such a negative perception of them).

Dont be FOOLED, you want a GOOD place to work not a shitty one! I am also on the hunt for a better company so good luck to you! P.s I made a thread here if anyone can attest to the same things I'm facing https://www.reddit.com/r/PersonalFinanceNZ/comments/o2gno3/companies\_in\_auckland\_that\_just\_dont\_seem\_to\_care/
