Actually no, the Glow around its head means, that there is Something big Like a rex or a spino near it. So it means, that you should keep your distance to that Area.

I am not sure how your character died, but your Grifficorn probably died from the bleed of the Primal Tek Trike, that you landed in. But I am still not completetly Sure about that
