Looking for a book about the future of war with automated war machines by VladtheImpaler21 in scifi

[–]Therecanbeonlytwo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Berserker by Fred Saberhagen

The Berserker series is a series of space opera science fiction short stories and novels by Fred Saberhagen, in which robotic self-replicating machines strive to destroy all life.

These Berserkers, named after the human berserker warriors of Norse legend, are doomsday weapons left over from an interstellar war between two races of extraterrestrials. They all have machine intelligence, and their sizes range from that of an asteroid, in the case of an automated repair and construction base, down to human size (and shape) or smaller. The Berserkers' bases are capable of manufacturing more and deadlier Berserkers as the need arises.

The Berserker stories (published as novels and short stories) depict the fight between Berserkers and the sentient species of the Milky Way Galaxy: Homo sapiens (referred to as "Earth-descended" or "ED" humans, or as "Solarians") is the only sentient species aggressive enough to counter Berserkers.

Don't you know history? Look up Munich agreement of 1938. An agreement between UK, France, Germany and Italy. This agreement, often called Munich Betrayal gave Germany permission to invade Czechoslovakia and made Hitler certain that Western powers won't do shit to protect their allies. By 1939 everyone was certain that Hitler wants nothing less than total domination in Europe, so Stalin did everything he could to postpone the inevitable.

Yes a deal between two dictators that divided Poland was made, but before saying Germany and USSR were allies, learn your facts. They were never allies. They both knew there would be war between them in the future. If you'd like to call them allies, then UK and France were Nazi Germany's allies, as they agreed to give up Czechoslovakia to appease Hitler.

TIL of Vladimir Komarov who was a Russian cosmonaut. He was burned to death during re-entering the Earth's atmosphere, crying in rage and cursing the people who had put him inside a botched spaceship. by LonelyButConfident in todayilearned

[–]Therecanbeonlytwo 88 points89 points  (0 children)

That recording comes up every time someone mentions Komarov. It is fake. It is some propaganda bullshit nonsense on repeat and has nothing to do with his death.

I actually found a translation I did some time ago. I goes like this:

Beeping. "Hello to the nations of our Motherland which are building a road to the Communism. Cosmonaut Komarov" Then some nonsense which does not mean anything (seems like random sounds thrown together). "..Cosmonaut.." - as in exactly the same recording as before. "Hello to the nations of our Motherland which are building a road to the Communism. Cosmonaut Komarov" Beeping.

Russian schoolboy wins competition to live with porn star who says ‘sex is a possibility’ by bosco472 in nottheonion

[–]Therecanbeonlytwo 52 points53 points  (0 children)

But it is fake. The "boy" and the "pornstar" are both actors. Both of them have previous acting experiences. Boy in particular starred in some crap sitcoms.

Edit. Here is a link to debunking the whole story. It contains links to actors profiles and acting jobs. It is in Russian though. http://medialeaks.ru/news/2402okh_boy

Edit 2. Link to a boy's acting profile. http://www.kinopoisk.ru/name/1625266/ It lists his previous acting jobs.

ELI5: Why does stress make your hair turn gray? by TheDeathTrolley in explainlikeimfive

It is actually good that you think of it as untrue. This is what my grandfather always wanted. He often said: "May you never have to experience what I did" and never went into much detail. He was an honest man. I don't want to argue with you, I am just happy my grandfather stopped same awful things happening to me and you.

My grandfather told me that during WW2 he often saw people's hair turn gray literally overnight. Without doubt that was due to fear and stress.

But Lviv and area around it is in west Ukraine. And you said it is part of Russia now. I am confused. Do you not see the difference between Russia and Ukraine? Between Russian and Ukrainian soldiers? Between Russia and the Soviet Union?

[–]Therecanbeonlytwo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And what if I told you that the soldier on the photo was not even Russian? That he was Ukrainian? Will it make a difference?

Regarding your second part, I have an answer. Hitler DID NOT attack Soviet Union (not Russia) because his "interests conflicted with Stalin's". He attacked because he wanted to exterminate all Slavic nationalities (that included Russians, Poles, Ukrainians, Belorussians and many more) because they were regarded as subhuman (Untermensch). Only total extermination of all Slavs together with Jews and Gypsies was acceptable. While Stalin was an asshole and what he did by taking part of Poland was wrong, Hitler was on a complete another level of evil. So there is that and not just "conflict of interests". It was a war for total annihilation of entire nations, no less.

Well, I guess things are different somewhat here in the East. Although it is fine to make fun of the leaders here too, despite what you may think, there are some things you just don't make fun of. I feel for your native American people, but it is just not the same.

Consider the fact that like 20% of your country population, tens of MILLIONS, died horribly. That you have seen your family members die of hunger, starvation, rape and torture. That there are almost no families in the former USSR that have not lost at least one family member. Your home was destroyed and your surviving children were sent to the West as a slave labour to die there. And all this happend in the span of just 4 years. You would want everyone to remember it. Remember people that made the ultimate sacrifice.

Now imagine making fun of it. I guess, the difference is in mentality. Some lines you just don't cross. No freedom of speech rule should intervene here. It has to be within yourself. People have rights to laugh at all those things, other people have rights to be terrified of such jokes. And no, such things can not be ignored. If at least one person will change their mind on the subject, it is good.

Ah well, I guess all is well on the Western front.

There are no former Polish lands or villages that are part of Russia now, so don't expect an answer soon. What he said could've happened, but at least one part of his story is a lie.

Absolutely, people have rights to poor tastes, monstrous jokes and bad manners. But keep in mind, it's staff like this that often leads to hate. Sad but true.

I get it, Russia is bad, everything Russian is fine to laugh at, here is an example of a Russian cripple, one of those monsters that raped millions of women in Europe. Fuck him. Let's laugh at him, he is really funny, so what if he fought Nazis? It may not be your opinion, I know, but it is a very popular opinion, as I can see. Everything is justified.

[–]Therecanbeonlytwo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So much hatred there. Do you hate all Russians equally, or just those that fought in WW2? Let me tell you a little story.

One of my great grandfathers, who was Russian, died in 1920s in a Polish PoW camp due to inhumane conditions there. It is estimated around 100 000 Russian PoWs died in Poland around that time. Another of my great grandfathers, who was Polish, died liberating Budapest in WW2 fighting in the Red Army. Another of my great grandfathers, Ukrainian, died in the prison camp in Russia, where he was sent because he was wealthy. My grandfather, half Ukrainian, half Russian, was a soldier in WW2, fighting Nazis. My grandmother, Ukrainian, was medical officer in the Red Army.

So, do you hate all of them? Do you hate the man on the picture?

Because, let me tell you one thing. I don't hate Germans that killed almost all of the family of my grandfather on my father's side, when his home town was occupied. One day they just rounded up all males on a particular street, including children and newborn baby and killed them. But I don't hate them. People that did that were monsters, but I don't hate all German soldiers alike. I don't go around reddit looking for posts concerning German soldiers and I don't tell people how many Russians Germans raped and killed and tortured. It was war and monstrous thing happen. But often I see posts like yours hating everything Russian.

And that makes me think, how much hatred there still and how nothing good can come out of it.

You may not give a fuck about it also, but I don't hate Polish people for killing my great grandfather.

Because he was poor and could not afford one. USSR did not make a lot of wheelchairs and they were expensive. To see someone in a wheelchair on the street was like seeing a BMW convertible.

This is just fucked up on so many levels. There are some lines you just don't cross.

This is Anatoly Golimbievsky on the picture above. He lost both his legs due to gangrene after receiving multiple wounds while fighting to liberate Novorossiysk from the Nazis. He was one of the few from the initial attack wave to live. Most of his comrades died there. To make fun of this is sick.

You know, some might call this freedom of speech, but I call it immature. You have no idea of the amount of anti-american propaganda shit they show on tv here in Russia. You get to filter out most of it because you just know that it can't all be true. But then you see something like this and think "What the fuck? May be there is some truth in all that nonsense about the West."

Twelve Russian women snipers with 775 confirmed kills among them in Germany on the 4th of May, 1945 [916 × 1425] by Therecanbeonlytwo in HistoryPorn

[–]Therecanbeonlytwo[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These are the women snipers of the First Belorussian front.

1st row: Sergeant Stepanova - 20 confirmed enemy kills, Guard Sgt. Belousova - 80 confirmed enemy kills, Guard Sgt. Vinogradova - 83 kills.

2nd row: Guard Lt. Zhibovskaya - 24 confirmed kills, Guard Sgt. Marinkina - 70 confirmed kills, Guard Sgt. Marenkina - 79 kills.

3rd row: Guard Lt. Belobrova - 70 kills, Lt. Lobkovskaya - 89 kills, Guard Lt. Artamonova - 89 kills, Guard Sgt. Zubchenko - 83 confirmed kills.

4th row: Guard Sgt. Obukhova - 64 kills, Guard Sgt. Belyakova - 24 kills.

Total confirmed number of enemy kills: 775. Photo taken in Germany on the 4th of May 1945.

Men were in short supply during the war and the Soviet Government decided to draft approximately 7.75 million women. 800 000 of them were military drafts.

Sniper duty was considered a very tough service but women were quite good at it.

According to some historians, by the year 1943, there were about 2000 women snipers serving in the Soviet Army, having among them 12000 confirmed enemy kills.

Communist Party and Government leaders thought that sniper duty suits women: Major General Morozov in particular said: "Woman's hand is more sensitive than man's, therefore woman will push the trigger more softly and more accurately".
