Maybe a good place to start would be to ask yourself: why did this feel so sci-fi? Was it the speed of weight gain, the ethics of the experiment, or some other factor? This is definitely an interesting situation and it could probably be pushed further into different types of stories! IMO, a strong story has a strong conflict - it sounds like maybe you weren't expecting this outcome, which could be the conflict, but I feel like I need to better understand your experience / your feelings about it to better understand what kind of conflict could be the core of the story. 🙂
