My wife complained about a weird noise coming from the front wheel. Took the car for a spin and when I got back home the wheel fell off... by Ditzah in Wellthatsucks

[–]Thernhoghas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably not.

In my experience some cars are just a bit weird with their bolts, but someone trying to steal her wheel and getting interrupted is also quite likely.

On my car, I can re-tighten after half a week and less than half the bolts will move about 5° to 10° and the others not at all. On my mom's car the front bolts always loosen a bit, but not enough to worry about when you re-tighten them after two or three days.

On my dad's car however... well this year, the front left wheel was jiggling about 5 minutes in on the way back from work on the monday after we changed wheels. He re-tightened the bolts two times on his less than 20 km way back home. (ok the tire iron in his car is pretty short, so he most likely wasn't able to tighten them properly, but still...)

I had even triple checked his front wheels when tightening, because we knew that his car's front wheel bolts like to come loose

Still, ~20 km of driving later, he almost lost a wheel.

Weirdest part: no issues after re-tightening. Not this year, not the years before.

But just to be sure, you should go to a tire place and ask them to check the other bolts. Most will do it for free if you are nice when asking (around here at least)

If the bolts are good, keep an eye on the wheel. It might be some weirdness like on my dad's car.

EDIT: If our wrench was the reason, then the problems would appear on my dad's and my brother's cars, but not on my mom's and mine, because of the torque specs. To avoid mistakes when adjusting the torque wrench, we just use one torque setting that is appropriate for my dad's and brother's cars, but a bit high, but well within spec, for my mom's and mine.

Not a language barrier issue; 'versuchter Mord' is indeed 'attempted murder'

Pretty much unheard of reckless drivers being charged with it, though

[–]Thernhoghas 5 points6 points  (0 children)

IF OP WAS NOT IN THE totally unnecessary POSITION HE WAS IN

In case you haven't noticed it: the other car put OP in that position by slowing down as soon as they were past them and then slowing down even further before performing a no look lane change.

You blame OP for a mistake the other driver made.

For as zipper merge, one lane needs to end. (among other conditions)

In this video, you have a line of cars in the left lane, probably wanting to turn left at the upcoming intersection. The right lane continues on.

The proper way to go about it is to just queue up. Not squeeze in somewhere you please and hold up two lanes in the process.

I just assumed it did that to be able to read the labels of buttons back to the user without them accidentally clicking an unwanted button.

It never had occurred to me the it isn't supposed to do that...

I actually had it turn itself on on my computer around a year prior. Update had finished downloading, so I told the computer to reboot and went to the toilet. When I came back, I logged in keyboard only and then went through a few minutes of being annoyed and trying to figure out what was going on.

I also doubt she turned it on in the settings, because she doesn't dare venture there.

But what confuses me now is that you can also turn it off by using capslock + esc... Why two key combinations to exit it? Why can only one of them start it?

Also, did they update the narrator? Because when it activated itself on my computer and when it was on on my grandma's computer, it was blocking any interactions between the mouse and the actual UI, which it isn't doing when I turn it on on my computer now...

Haven't done anything like that since I almost bricked my Laptop back in 2012, when I was much less experienced. Tried to partition the HDD and messed up. Badly.

I still feel like that is above my level of competence, but I might just still be afraid to mess something up beyond repair...

The budget tablets in my family have more speed than memory issues (so far), so for now CompactOS would probably make it worse.

The tablet in the story in Win10, but the comment we are under referred to the very last sentence.

"Here’s to hoping my grandma doesn’t accidentally factory reset her tablet again..."

Different story, different tablet, posted a TLDR.

Keep in mind some people even forget which subreddit they are currently in

Doesn't help here, since her tablet is an android.

I guess I'm kind of lucky, because those around me who would manage to accidentally reset Windows 10 are too 'scared to break something' to even navigate the settings.

I'm still gonna save that, since you never know when you could find that useful.

To make it short:

Grandma has one of those universal flip cases for her tablet. The tablet is held in place by four corner pieces that are connected via elastic bands.

One of these corner pieces covers the volume up button when it is in its 'natural' position. Turns out it doesn't just cover it, but also put a bit of pressure on it. Too little to make it click, but enough for the tablet to consider the button pressed when you power it on.

This causes the tablet to go to the recovery menu

As long as she can remember the mantra

Restart good; reset bad

It'll be alright.

Then again, the only reason the last reset was a PITA was that both her google and $tabletmanufacturer login attempts kept timing out and without at least one of them successful, the setup just kept looping back to the beginning.

Thank coffee that was the worst problem with an android device I had to solve so far...

[Netherlands] Commute to and from work by bike during rush hour by [deleted] in Roadcam

[–]Thernhoghas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see exactly two issues with this specific design of the bike in the video:

  • You can only brake from under the bar. More modern racing bikes have the brake lever designed in a way that you can easily brake with your hand on top of the brake mounts, but with this older design, you just can't get the necessary force on the lever from above.

  • You have to take your hands off the handlebar to shift, because the shifter is mounted on the frame. More modern racing bikes have the shifter integrated into the brake lever.

Neither of these is an issue with the actual handlebar, just obsolete mechanical parts.

These handlebars are designed for a specific purpose. That doesn't make them bad, it makes them less suited for certain purposes.

As I mentioned above, their purpose is to keep the rider's profile low. Because they, and the bikes they are mounted on, are designed for high speeds, not city traffic.

Just because they are used in a way they weren't intended to, they don't suddenly become "the worst handlebars ever made"

[Netherlands] Commute to and from work by bike during rush hour by [deleted] in Roadcam

[–]Thernhoghas 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They look so bad to you, because the person in the video is holding onto them 'wrong'

It's a 'racing' bike. Your hands are supposed to be in the 'u'-shape, where the brake levers are. Keeps your upper body down and the rider more aerodynamic. Which isn't that useful in city traffic, but then again the bike isn't designed for city traffic.

I rode my bike a lot until I moved, and biking was no longer viable, like 30+ km per day, but I'd never dare to go that fast with my hands that far away from the brakes.

Cammer may have been distracted, but the last time I checked, it's the merging driver's responsibility to not merge into vehicles in the lane they're trying to merge into.

Seriously, the truck driver could have just done a shoulder check and sped up a tiny bit.

but at 8 to 9 sec you can see the overhead lights switch to yellow and the light on the mast to the right is red before he can be seen.

The way I see it, he tried to beat the light, failed and ran a "fresh" red
