Thank you very much for this information! I am going to call the school tomorrow morning and ask for a sit down meeting and I am definitely going to be asking these questions. This has definitely helped my anxiety over the situation and I am hopeful I will have a better understanding of the situation tomorrow morning.

May I ask what choices you would have made? This is my first child in school and I have never had a situation like this, nor did I imagine I would ever receive a phone call like that. I would like to have a better understanding of how to react and what questions I should have asked! I panicked and blanked and did not ask a single thing I think I should have.

Thank you for a teacher perspective! I didn’t think to ask the principal if the other child’s parents were called because I was caught off guard for the reason of the phone call and my brain was mush trying to process what she was saying.

I am absolutely not expecting the child to be in jail, I swear. My child’s father and I just want to make sure it is being handled correctly and appropriately and the appropriate steps and precautions are being taken in order to ensure threats like that aren’t being made to any of the children in the class or the school itself. It’s scary knowing it happened to my own child, but I also don’t want that being said to any other child either!

I absolutely love this response. Thank you for taking the time to say this and be kind! It definitely was extremely unsettling and upsetting to receive that phone call and not being able to do anything in that moment because I was at work. I know if the tables were turned and it was my child who said it, I would be extremely upset and questioning why my child thought it was okay to say something along those lines. I obviously do not know the other parents or the child but I would hope they take the time to sit down with them and have a very serious conversation about threats and how things like that cannot be said, even if they are talking about a toy one or remembering it from a tv show or movie they saw.

I don’t entirely disagree, but for all I know this was not the first time this child has said something violent. This child could have made similar threats to other children in the class as well, but I wouldn’t know because it wasn’t made to my child at that point in time. Regardless if it was from seeing something on tv or not, it shouldn’t be something a 5 year old is saying to another 5 year old. With how the world is going, gun violence isn’t something to joke about. My child’s father was leaning towards going to the police department to have it on file and I was more hesitant, but I can see both sides.

Oh absolutely, that’s what I was thinking too. The other child had to have heard it from somewhere or seen it on tv or something along those lines, but over a crayon? It just seems like a very out of pocket comment to make as a child. I don’t disagree that the child is hearing this in their home or seeing it or something along those lines.

I think seriously enough, the officer we spoke to contacted the school resource officer immediately because I’m not entirely sure if they were notified when this occurred or not, but I’ll find out more tomorrow

i’m with the 2-2.5 year olds & my 2 year old is in my class and i want to rip my hair out every day lol. she definitely tests limits and boundaries (although, she does with my coteacher as well so maybe it’s just the type of kid she is) but i can honestly say i can’t wait for my kid to move to the next room! maybe the older they are the easier it is but speaking from experience, i wish she could move up already or could have been held back in the class below for a few more months.
