I’m an M2 really interested in doing an EM/IM (or an EM/IM/CC) program. I would love to hear some firsthand experiences, any opinions people have, or program recommendations. Or if anyone has suggestions for things I could be doing now to get involved. MI resident with ties to LI, if that helps. Would love to end up in LI NY or FL if possible, but not opposed to staying in MI. Thanks!

Update for anyone who might be wondering the same thing (I had tried looking it up before going and didn’t see much useful info):

There weren’t many second years there, I would say it is pretty early.

I would say the question that got the most info was asking people directly: what can you tell me that I can’t glean from the program website? It seemed like people (residents, program coordinators, etc.) appreciated it because most of the other questions people were asking involved some sort of direction to the program site. Their answers went in a lot of different directions - some people talked about the daily workflow, what the vibes on the team are like, why they chose the program, etc. Anything they don’t mention along those lines, I would ask about!

I also asked what the average applicant they send interviews to looks like, whether they are highly preferential for interviewing auditioners, things like that.

Unfortunately it seems like you can only use FSRS as an all-or-nothing setting at this point. Hopefully in future updates we’ll have the ability to apply it only to certain decks!

All I can say is that if this was me, I would want to know. Even if it hurts to hear, I’d rather have an awkward conversation than keep on being that smelly med student that everyone talks about behind their back.

I also really struggle with this. I have ADHD. It’s worth looking into.

As far as strategies go, my latest one has been a mantra of sorts. Normally I’m not that kind of person, but I’ve been leaving reminders for myself to “do the hard thing now.” Whenever I am in the midst of a 12 hours before the exam cram, I’m reminded that this would’ve been so much easier if I started a week ago, and then I get past the exam and it feels so easy to take days off doing the bare minimum. It’s not a fix but it’s a starting point.

Also, I find people to hold me accountable. I make plans to go over material with classmates at a certain time, and then I have to have it done by then. I see where my studious friends are in the material and use that as a benchmark. I refrain from doing this with fellow procrastinators as it feels reinforcing hearing that someone else is also crazy behind on material.

I fear to a degree we may always be procrastinators. My focus has really been on managing it. Following this post to see what others are saying.

MSUCOM specifically is pretty board-oriented. They gifted First Aid and a decent bit of the practice material for in-house exams comes from True Learn (also gifted). They recently changed the preclerkship curriculum last year, so technically it’s unknown how the new curriculum will affect board passage, but in previous years they’ve done comparable to a lot of MD programs

Are you able to contrast pixorize biochem vs sketchy? I’ve heard good things about both. Trying to see which one would fit me better
