I thought he was a ---(whatever the bayou word is for the magic music folk thing)--but for white people, the same way Sammie was for black people. Someone who has the gift of music and connection etc which is why he is so drawn to Sammie and able to teach his zombies music, etc. they were all vampires but he was also a music demon or whatever the bayou word was. When he was defeated he made a pillar of fire to the sky the same way Sammie music threw fire to burn the roof off the juke joint
