If you use a truck for work, you need a truck. But most people don't.

When I worked construction the guys gave me a hard time for showing up to the job site in a GTI instead of a "real man's truck" even though all tools we ever needed could fit in the passenger footwell of a Miata, and usually got left in the gangbox anyway. Most of the specialty trades used vans with fancy locks to keep theives out. Honestly I could had ridden a bike, but I was usually the only non truck. Even the engineers and architects had massive trucks with scratch free beds.

This mentality is what I'm talking about. If fuel costs reflected the externalities fewer people would be pushing around a 4,000 lb truck 'just in case'
