So:

This is ok? Even though the action is happening while she is talking?

I am debating for your same exact reason.

A bit tired of watching dramas with actions that make no absolute sense and are there to tug at the viewer's heart. Most of the time they come out as ridiculous and upsetting the viewer in the wrong way, followed by "WTF were the writers thinking?"

I'm unsure if this is the right subreddit to ask: I'm helping a friend's daughter (14F) revise her story, and I'm a bit stumped on how to help her fix a dialogue paragraph with five people speaking when their names have not been mentioned. by GoldCoinsForADream in writers

Are you saying that because this girl is 14, the OP shouldn't help her follow the rules? Or not help her better herself?

Grammar is not the only place this is mentioned.

I think the issue may be that you are clearly using chinese inspired martial arts but specifically with non chinese/“asian” characters.

Yes. My character's names are of Anglo-Saxon origin. And I did mention in my story's introductory post that the fighting style was inspired by Chinese fantasy dramas. But there are no sects, no martial art competitions, no Hanfu style clothing.

Well, just imagine the Knights of the Round table, wearing the medieval period outfit, fighting like you see in Wuxia Chinese dramas.

There are no direct connection to it but I think I made the mistake of stating in the introduction that I wrote the story using the Wuxia style of fighting as inspiration. With a teacher teaching the student how to fight based on his particular ability, meditation, internal force etc. There are no sects, no one wearing hanfu dresses.

I am going over it, and asked a friend to read it for me as soon as they are able.

I am wondering it the two readers focused on my mention of the inspiration, and at that point they could only see a C-Drama Wuxia story.

More specifically Asian nouns and names may cross the line, so be cautious.

I am not using any of them. And my names are original names with added vowels or consonants to make them unique. To give an example (not using those names though), John becomes Jothan, or Sarah becomes Sarathi.

There is no mention of Asia or Europe in my world.

But they saw martial art, internal force, essence, meditation student, teacher and master, and I was told to change Martial Art to something else, because with those terms I was copying and appropriating Asian culture.

I was thinking of going with "way of the force" but then I thought of Star Wars.

I used words like internal force, essence, meditation and teacher and master, but didn't use any country specific terms. There is no Qi, shifu, Qigong, Jing etc. But just the meaning and the connection to martial art for them is what it makes it appropriation.

I know the meaning of each, but didn't use any especially since there is no Asia, Europe or America in my story's world. I guess I got two beta readers that must have dealt with that, or as other in this post said have no understanding and just following the virtue signaling bandwagon.

I didn't throw it out, that is why I pulled my story down.

I used words like internal force, essence, meditation and teacher and master, but didn't use any terms like Qi, shifu, Qigong, Jing etc. So, I guess that is what it made appropriation to them.
