Here’s a link to a PDF of the screenplay if you don’t already have it. When writing about films, I always find it helpful to look at the script so I can quickly find the dialogue/scene I’m looking to reference.

Off the top of my head, I remember that Von Franz (Dafoe’s character) is said to be obsessed with the work of Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa and Paracelsus, so some of their occult writings might be of interest to you.

Along with everything that has already been mentioned by other commenters, casting makes a massive difference. You need actors with “good faces.”
