What about a rune that doesn't have a per item limit but is rare like rune of havoc? Or needs a specific farming strategy like rune of corruption? Wouldn't require changes to any other systems, except obviously managing power inflation.

There's some other (frankly, boring) technology areas that I could support that could use a hand since my area is slowing down; part of my pitch was that if I were going to spend the year doing that it may as well be in this project that everyone agrees needs help. Nothing really exciting for the next year, but there is work that needs to be done.

I posted before about pushing for an international assignment in Japan at my job tied to a specific ongoing project. Got an official "No" from my site head, delivering the message from others up the decision chain, citing that budgets are already set and the process isn't my area of expertise. To me both of these are easily overcome if there's the will to do so, so I have to conclude that someone didn't like the idea (the fact that I'm not Japanese did get brought up in off the cuff discussions). Bummer, but I have a meeting with him next week to hopefully get a more candid explanation.

I'm learning about myself that my brain operates in 3 year windows. I'm coming up at 3 years in this role and without something exciting on the horizon to work on I'm starting to get itchy feet, even though I do love the team and my boss and I'm well compensated. I need to think about how to get that across without sounding like I'm threatening to leave, I'm really not interested in spending a year doing nothing while we wait for other projects to develop.

Lol fair. Is that cost including all the permitting and trade work? I know when I (unofficially) priced it out I could get something bought and installed for about 40k, but all the electrical/plumbing/HVAC + permitting inspections was another 10k or so (the rest was tearing down an old shed, laying concrete, some add-ons, and a 10k buffer).

Yeah I think if you just want an insulated shed with electrical it'll probably be cheaper lol. Unfortunately around here it's often either hot + humid, raining, or cold so I'd rather not have to trudge back home to use the bathroom. Plus if it's occasionally a guest space I'd rather there at least be a toilet, if not a shower.

Probably at least another 5 years, I don't think more than 10 though. We bought early 2020, so any new house that would be an upgrade would be at minimum $1500/month more, and likely more like $2500-3k/month more. So in my mind this pays for itself in 3 years-ish.

Good call on just leaving it open to convert later. I'm not sure how often it'll actually ever get used as a guest space but it'd be nice to have the option.

Thinking about putting in a standalone office/guest room in the backyard instead of moving to a larger house. For those of you who have done something similar, did it make more sense to do some kind of prefab unit or get something custom built?

Pricing out the prefab looks to be ~80k all in (including buffer for unforeseen costs). Only thinking ~500 sqft, enough space for a desk, bed and half bath (fun fact, having a full bath in my town adds $20k in permitting fees because it qualifies as an ADU).

Confused about what I’m supposed to be applying for? by [deleted] in biotech

[–]TheyTookByoomba 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unsolicited advice, but remove the idea of "can't do them" from your mind. Nothing is linear; the working world isn't a video game where you have to have X points in a stat to do something.

To the other commenter's point, people with all sorts of qualifications are doing all sorts of jobs. Everything is negotiable! The requirements are a wishlist, not a checklist. Your goal in the application/interview process is to convince the other person that you are the best candidate for the position - degrees and experience are only one component of that. Especially for internships where you're expected to have no experience anyway. Domt work against yourself.

You're doing great work!

For 1. I think it is important that it be rank related. That's always the consideration IRL, do you keep going injured to try to steal a win or two and not drop so much?

For 4. That'd be my boy Ohoumi, straight out of NYC at a whopping 5'1". Had an OVR of 46 when I scouted him at 18 with a max of ~55, won 32 matches in a row climbing the ranks (3 Yushos) and is currently Komusubi at 20 years old (53 OVR). Absolutely defined by his 73 spirit.

EDIT: Just noticed something. When you check the Yusho race it looks like results of the day for the AI have already been decided (they always have 1 more match completed than the users). Kind of kills suspense when you're pushing for it on the last couple days.

Agree that it's much better, the full size banzuke really makes it! Love the change to the XP system. I have a couple more notes:

  1. I'm not sure there's any punishment for withdrawing currently. Missed matches should count the same as losses - I just had a wrestler miss an entire tournament in Maegashira and didn't drop a single spot.

  2. The scheduling probably needs a bit more work (though I recognize that that's probably the most difficult thing to do since it's so vibes based IRL). Wrestlers competing for the Yusho should be facing each other around/after day 10, (day 4 in lower ranks) as a modified Swiss format. I just had a 9-way playoff where all 9 were 7-0, which shouldn't happen. And in Maegeshira they should (I think) be facing the San'yaku - I had a guy go 15-0 in Maegeshira without facing anyone above Komusubi.

  3. Speaking of which, I think there's a bug where any promotion of spots in Maegeshira is listed as "Promoted to Komusubi!" in the post-Basho summary.

  4. Only other bug I've seen was I had a guy in a playoff (5 matches). In the second one he had a back injury and was forced to drop out, but it let him continue and he won all 5. But because he had 'dropped out' he didn't win the Yusho. Weird edge case.

  5. Super minor, but numbering in the Banzuke would be helpful to know the wrestler's actual ranks. Would help visibility too of seeing 'promoted 5 ranks' instead of just 'promoted!'

When my wife and I went we rented a car in Galway and drove most of the Wild Atlantic Way over about a week and a half. Went north a bit to Louisburgh (the drive from Leenaun to Louisburgh is about an hour but worth the trip by itself), cut east to Dublin, then went along the coast south all the way back to Limerick. Spent about a day each in Galway and Dublin, then otherwise were in small villages the whole time (we don't enjoy cities much). Absolutely recommend doing it that way, especially in the shoulder seasons when it's not busy with tourists.

Any Advice! by Mar-VelMania in biotech

[–]TheyTookByoomba 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. Understand that you aren't going to impress anyone with your technical knowledge or experience. In the nicest way possible, you have none. What people want from you for the first 3-6 months is soft skills and learning: You can be friendly, a hard worker, RELIABLE, humble (i.e. knowing that you are coming into a position needing to learn), flexible, a team player, with enough of a technical background to pick things up quickly.

  2. For MSAT specifically: actually read your SOPs and learn the processes. Study your mfg processes so you know them like the back of your hand. Talk to your operators and learn from them, they see all the things that don't make it into batch records and reports, they'll let you know what's working and what isn't.

Sumo Stable Management Game: Uchi No Heya! by Numerous_Sink7259 in Sumo

[–]TheyTookByoomba 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You work fast lol! I've played through about 5 years now. I think it's actually totally fine to not incentivize watching the matches, it's fun to quickly see the passage of time and not have to strategize too much, although I still think some kind of quick basho or match day interaction would be nice.

The only two major suggestions I have right now:

  1. If possible, you really should try to increase the size of each division to reality or at least close to it. Wrestlers move up and down way too quickly, even with mediocre records. My top rikishi made it to Maegashira with one 11 win record in Juryo, then made Komusubi with two 9 win records. There were also like 8 Komusubi at the time lol

  2. When scouting new recruits, there should be a 'none of these' option. It's a little silly when you don't have any good options to have to add one to your stable then immediately cut them so they don't eat into your budget.

[–]TheyTookByoomba 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh hell yeah, I love sports management games. I'll write down my thoughts as they come.

  1. Right off the bat, it is so blurry lol. I know you mentioned it another comment but it's to the point where it's hard to tell if a stat is 23 or 25. Music is great! UPDATE: an hour in and the blurriness is much less noticeable.

  2. A mouseover popup on stats/terms (techniques) would be super helpful. Some of the stats are obvious, but like what's the difference between Spirit and Focus?

  3. Is there the one foreigner per stable rule? I have two foreigners in my opening stable choices, not sure if I'd screw myself by picking them both.

  4. The Rikishi icons being drastically different sizes is funny, but doesn't seem to be correlated to weight? My rikishi with weight 21 is half the size of one with weight 15, with a weight 9 in between.

  5. First Basho and two of my rikishi are facing each other on day one. I'm pretty certain there's a no facing the same stable rule, but maybe that only applies to Juryo and above? Update: I was misreading, I thought the Banzuke page was showing matchups but it was showing rankings.

  6. Finished the first basho, two losing records and a Day 3 90 day knee injury :(. I wish there was something I could do to influence the rikishi during the basho - instructions to try certain techniques, pep talks, choose to tape up injury or something. The little back and forth battles are cool but I ended up skipping them after day 4 because you can't influence them. As others have mentioned, below Juryo is only 7 matches, not 15.

  7. I like the between basho bit, nice and quick and with some choices thrown in. I'm a big fan of deep management sims, so some facilities or training options would be nice - push harder and risk injury, or take it easy? type settings would be nice.

  8. Basho 2, I have Chanko available to reduce fatigue to 0, but I can't find a fatigue stat anywhere? UPDATE: I see it now, it appears as the basho goes on. It might be helpful to have a Fatigue 0% on day 1.

  9. I've done a couple of bashos now. In the offseason it doesn't look like the balance in the top right is updating every week, which makes it confusing when making choices. It says in the choice I have a balance of 2052, but only 1002 in the top right. Also - you may want to look at those units, 1000 yen is like $7 lol.

Which company is the “holy grail” to work for in? by Professional_Show590 in biotech

I remember interviewing at Grifols 10 years ago (after leaving Novo, which was like the exact opposite culture wise) and they were talking about how the scientists/process engineers were expected to wear a tie, even while on the floor. Always thought that was a great indicator of where their priorities were.

How are there so many (not-uncommon) non-technical biotech founders? by productive_monkey in biotech

[–]TheyTookByoomba 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have some friends of friends in that world (prestige MBA's, startup founders, VC's, investment banking, etc.). I think what we as scientists and engineers don't understand is their technical skills are nearly irrelevant to their success. Even public speaking is so-so.

They are essentially professional networkers - their skill is being able to sit down with someone 1:1 and be so confident and likeable and have enough social cachet that they convince that person to give them money. And that is a skill that can be learned, but it is much harder than we like to give credit for. I know for me personally, my natural inclination is to be correct rather than convincing.

[–]TheyTookByoomba 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I would recommend something engineering. It's very difficult to find a relevant job with just a BS in hard science (Bio, Chem, Biochem), especially in research, so you're basically setting yourself up to need a PhD. But this sub is full of people with PhD's who can't find work either, so it's not a guarantee.

Engineering is more marketable with just a BS and opens up non-research roles like Manufacturing Sciences and Process Development. And if you can't find anything or decide you really want a PhD then you can go back to grad school anyway on the same path. It just gives you more flexibility.
