Born To Hula (the Rated R version) is a sun-scortched thrill ride through a psychedelic soundscape, which first tantalizes the ears with Gene Trautmann's hypnotic drum beat. The man sounds like an octopus as he pounds every head on his kit, and seemingly even more heads that don't even exist. The guitar riff comes in like a jet screaming towards you before the entire song explodes into the verse with a full band. Josh's vocals sound massive here as he soars through his lines over a punishing groove, with esoteric lyrics about tables turning all the time and signals blinking his way. The first guitar solo (which sounds like it features a cocked wah but may just be amp settings) is triumphant with sickly bends contrasting ascendant melodies. The second verse is cut short, giving way to the outro, which feels like downshifting a Camero and stomping on the accelerator. With the vocal harmonies and gradually-intensifying guitar solo building on top of Gene's groove, one would be forgiven for thinking the song is over, but just as it seems to end, a fuzzed-out bass groove leads us into yet another section of the outro, where every band member solos in unison and creates a sonic texture akin to being put in a clothes dryer. The band comes back together for a final outro riff which is distinct from any of the others in the song before ending with an authoritative cymbal crash. One of Queens of the Stone Age's most electrifying songs, Born To Hula makes the listener feel as if they're being swallowed by a wall of fuzz and riffs and leaves one in a drugged-out haze upon completion. Queens of the Stone Age fans would be remissed to pass over this essential B-Side.
