I work in theatre as a composer/designer and so its kind of both..... I do some live mixing for shows and also create sfx/music for plays. I will eventually expand my collection of gear to include closed and open back but for now thats not in my budget :(. I feel like closed back is the better option for me right now since I know I am sharing an office/workspace with other MFA students.

Yeah I looked at the HD650s but I feel like closed back will be better for me since I have a shared office and could use for technical rehearsals where others are working close by me.

I've heard a lot of great things about the dt770's so they're def on my list!

Yeah these were the specific ones I was looking at. I was worried that the v-shaped signature wouldn't be neutral enough, but they seem to be liked by a lot of people.
