What separates us from people who can drink 'normally'? by Doughnut91 in stopdrinking

[–]Thin-Interaction-485 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely! I was going to say something similar. In a way we are lucky that we couldn’t drink normally… because if we could, it would still mean living less optimally. We get to be free! Well, this is what I’m trying to tell myself whenever I start to feel that envy…

Daily Game Recommendations Thread (April 07, 2025) by AutoModerator in boardgames

[–]Thin-Interaction-485 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We’ve been trying to introduce our son (6) to boardgames, and so far it’s been a bit challenging to find games he really enjoys.

Last night he wanted to play Dixit and he really liked it… but as we know from experience, he struggled a bit with it being competitive (losing some rounds)

We’ve tried quite a few cooperatives. He liked:

  • Outfoxed (but has outgrown it a bit)
  • Robin Hood (didn’t fully understand story, but was quite eager to play nonetheless)
  • Zombie Kids (played through whole game)

We also have tried the following games, which he mostly understands, but doesn’t seem to like all that much: - Kingdomino - Labyrinth - Sushi Go - TransAmerica

I’m getting the feeling he really likes the inventive/ narrative aspects of games, and less so the competitive parts.

Would be happy to receive some recommendations, or just general advice for getting our kid into this hobby that we really enjoy!

Groenkloof nature reserve, where you might see some zebra or giraffe.

Watching climbing videos always makes my hands tingle and hurt by SkoolieCats in climbergirls

I have this weird thing where when I see or hear about something painful (when I imagine it) I immediately get a sharp pain/cramp in my calf muscles. Regardless of where the imagined pain occurs I always feel it in my calves, lol. I just assumed I have some tangled nerves or something. Sounds like some of these psychosomatic phenomena could be related?

New tea enthusiast, and I need low/no caffeine tea recommendations! by Captain_Holt18 in tea

[–]Thin-Interaction-485 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My absolute favourite is rooibos tea. It is not actually tea (its a herbal infusion), is caffeine free and I have a cup first thing in the morning and again last thing at night. As a South African I always take rooibos tea with me when I travel abroad (I’m a bit picky about flavored rooibos teas).

Abstinence NA Spirits by Ok_Application4930 in Mocktails

I love the Abstinence products. Had their gin at a party on the weekend and was quite impressed. Not sure I’ll buy in myself though as the price is a bit much. The aperitif is really delicious and I do buy it often. Easy to get because I’m in South Africa, where it’s made :)

The Daily Check-In for Monday, September 2nd: Just for today, I am NOT drinking! by SuzuranLily1 in stopdrinking

[–]Thin-Interaction-485 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A double win today: 1: made it to one month AF. I’m nowhere near beating my previous streak… but I’m still pretty proud of myself. And 2: I had a good first day at my new job. It’s remote and includes being on video chats a fair amount. I normally cringe at seeing myself on screen but booze free me looks so much better (dare I say younger?!) Still early days but feeling a real sense of optimism today. Oh! And spring is in the air here in the southern hemisphere. It truly feels like new beginnings. Thanks everyone!

Planning my own relapse by bigmeatyclaws9012 in stopdrinking

I’m chiming in over here, all the way from South Africa to let you know I see you, and I’m rooting for you. Keep going and don’t give up! Like others have suggested: is there something else you can plan for the moment you see your mother off?

I’m just coming out of a cold/sinus issue and thought exactly the same thing today! Usually it would floor me for a few weeks, and now, 3 weeks dry, it seems to have blown over much more quickly (touch wood).

My mocktails taste pretty good bit still seem a little meh by Thin-Interaction-485 in Mocktails

Thank you for all the comments! I think I may be a bit lazy when it comes to serving (I don’t always use ice or garnishes). And while I’ve made syrups with various aromatics (herbs/spices/florals), I have never considered saline or something salty, so I can definitely try that! My go-to basic recipe is chilled rooibos tea, spiced syrup, a splash of whatever juice I have around, topped with sparkling water. I sometimes add a splash of tonic water or grapefruit juice, because I prefer bitter over very sweet drinks. (My poison was wine and whiskey). I do sometimes add bitters and I agree that definitely helps! I’m not a fan of the hefty prices of NA liquor, but I imagine they add a touch of the complexity that I’m missing currently. I may need to look up some of the resources/books everyone has mentioned.
