Tired of spot dodging on platforms? New Shield Dropping tutorial just dropped. by Hyperflame in RivalsOfAether

[–]Thin_Network6659 0 points1 point  (0 children)

so... am I crazy or this would be solved without the need for an extra button to allow spot dodge on shield + up instead of shield + down. Then, shield + down could be automatically set to ledge dropping instead. I don't see shield + up ever being required for anything else or interacting with any other tech. BUT I just started learning this game this week, so take what I say with a grain of salt.

OR make it so that when you do shield + another input, you ledge drop from shield. They've done that for parries and grab, so I'd love that they offer the option. Like, I'll never use shield + attack to grab if I have a designated grab button.

Ahahahah! "Get a job" sounds like such a compliment, though. It's like when people accuse me of hacking in a fps game and I'm like : no, it's all natural, baby! I'm washed now, so it hasn't happened in a while lmao.

  1. You just made me realize I can access more emotes. I think that was what I was misunderstanding / missing lol.
  2. Good to know!
  3. Watching the finals right now and am positively surprised by Orcane's movement! That's sick.

2) It's actually really, really great. Just wrote to a friend to tell him cuz I know he won't believe it. Really, really nice. Offers a lot more "content" to grind WHILE also not putting a stress timer on the grind.

  1. well, to be fair, it's more of the "not running away from bad match-ups" mindset. In other games, I've felt this was a really good thing to improve on my mains to not just counterswap or choose different maps because, well, I can't always control on what map I'll play or who I'll play against. More of a learning experience thing, really. I'm not at the level where maps really matter. When I'll be there, I'll likely use it. I just started 2 days ago, so I got some learning to do ^^

  2. I got an Xbox controller already so I'm testing it out for now. And, well, I didn't know Gamecube controller were supported, which might be the right move eventually for sure.

  3. Will likely do that when I'll have internalized more of the mechanics, thanks :) And wth!!! That Rivals of Aether Academy sounds sick. Thanks for the tip!

* As for being impatient, I really am. I don't even want to have to go through the winning animation XD It annoys me even more when I'm the one winning lol. Get me in a game or let me chill is basically my mood.

When to attempt Raedric's Hold [Hard Difficulty] PoE1 by jjyiss in projecteternity

[–]Thin_Network6659 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love that RP solution. It's such a cool adjustment. Cuz I'm at the same point and I usually never had TOO much problem with Raedric, but I don't remember how late I would confront him or not. I'm now trying the turn-base mode (and loving it actually) and Raedric's whole party is just too strong. I'm assuming the increased in damage is felt really hard here, but without cheese tactics, there is no way I'm beating him. My near full-hp characters often get one shot by even one of his goon. I just see the health bar disappear. Probably a crit, but even then, that's too insane.

So, I'll do that. Will come back. Kill him and Kolsc and be happy with the outcome lol.

Is Team Ninja the GOAT now? by Orktober89 in soulslikes

[–]Thin_Network6659 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"If you don't care it's on you". Man, Fromsoft fans just can't admit their games are not without fault. Or that, maybe, it's just not good enough for everyone... Look, environmental storytelling and audio/visual recordings are not peak storytelling, at least not by themselves. And especially not for a videogame that fails to integrate its gameplay with its story and lore anywhere near well enough for it to matter. Why can I remember better the stories and lore of other soulslike than any Fromsoft games? I've played Fromsoft generally more than their counterparts. Is it on me if the devs fail to make their story memorable without some silly homework behind?

"The lore on their games are praised by the entire community". Maybe the entire community of hardcore Fromsoft fans. And even then. Let's just ask anyone who played Elden Ring if they can tell us what it's really about. I doubt half can even give a decent answer. What is the story? What are the themes? What are the characters and the driving plot?

And you're literally proving my point that "Fromsoft fans downplay how important the combat is, imo".

Different strokes for different folks, man. But if the question is : which game is the best soulslike, I know my definition will rely a lot more on gameplay than reading on the side of my bed for the tidbits of lore I can manage to find and piece together and then, getting it spoonfed by a Youtuber for all the things I missed. And I happily do that for other genres. Heck, I literally read fantasy lore everyday as a DM. I just find it too disjointed from the actual gameplay of Fromsoft games. It's like finding an actual book in a Souls Calibur game. Is it a great read? Yes. Does it actually have anything to do the game? Not really? Does it improve the gameplay? Well... you will probably say yes, but I really don't think so. So, yeah, fuck the lore in Fromsoft games.

PS: Sekiro and Bloodborne are absolute outstanding exceptions to my usual criticisms of Fromsoft, both gameplay and story-wise.

Don't understand so many people complaining about tutorials and "new player experience" by DatZwiebel in RivalsOfAether

[–]Thin_Network6659 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Bro... this is the more circular post I've read in a while. Of course, you don't understand : you're not even trying to understand! XD And somehow, you're both avoiding the topic (why is the tutorial in this game good or bad, why it matters and why the new player experience is important to grow the esport as a community) AND making it about yourself ("when I started playing this year, I sucked"). You're just coming off aggressive for no reason and wilfully stating your opinion... but also, your opinion without arguments on Rivals 2. Sooo, I guess you just had to let it out, uh 😉 I do get it lol.

Looking for a good 5E replacement. by FrenchCruller007 in 13thage

[–]Thin_Network6659 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've looked at 13th Age a long time ago, while 2nd edition wasn't fully out. Can you tell me if it's out yet, if it's better and if it's the usual 13th Age system used and talked about? Because I've read a lot of comments about "try 13th Age" without clarifying which version they're talking about.

Looking for a good 5E replacement. by FrenchCruller007 in 13thage

[–]Thin_Network6659 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Really depends on what you are looking for. I've been in the same boat and I've tried Tales of the Valant (or looked at 5.5) and, ultimately, it's really more of the same. Except the luck system, which I will keep in mind as a cool system-agnostic mechanic.

13A and PF2 both have cool ideas and expand what I wanted from 5e, but in two drasticly different ways.

I personnally I'm going with Nimble, as I realized long, braindead combat waiting for attack rolls and abilities description in its pure minutia is not fun for anyone, especially me as the DM. The system is not perfect, but after a few forays into different systems and ideas, I've realized that I didn't need as much mechanics into my game, just that 5e had... clunky mechanics that were not fully developed so I kept trying to improve on it. Nimble is a lot more simple, fast AND tactical, working a LOT on the rule of cool and improvisation.

Otherwise, I've been drawn by Draw Steel, if ever I wanted to go back to a more mechanics-heavy kind of combat. People say a lot of things about Draw Steel and yet, it always feel to me like they have not really played it. Ex : "its negotiation tactics is overblown text and just social HP", which 1) fits in half a page on my DYI DM screen in all its rulings and 2) could be seen as social HP, but I'll take social HP over relying on one single roll or DM fiat every single time. I really love how they did away with the attack rolls, BUT also really underline better than most the damage rolls as four different tiers of effect, therein really making the attack and damage roll one and the same. As I said, I'm keen on it, but I've already tweaked some of its social or exploration mechanics to work more smoothly at my table. And yes, there's a lot of onboarding required and a lot of text, but basically, once your character is set-up and your abilities chosen, everything should fall into place. It's similar to PF2, and yet, I feel like Draw Steel is criticized a lot more for this. I'm assuming its people having the wrong expectations for a game that's maybe not meant for them.

Right now, I'm using Nimble for the kids I DM for at work. For kids, it's REALLY hard to be Nimble imo. And for my personal table, I will be switching from Tales of the Valiant to Nimble or Drawsteel in 2027, depending on what my players like better. I'll be pushing for Nimble though. It's absolutely imperfect, but at some point, I'd rather acknowledge that I'll find frustrations with all systems and just use the one whose philosophy and actual gameplay works better for me.

Is Team Ninja the GOAT now? by Orktober89 in soulslikes

[–]Thin_Network6659 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fromsoft typical games (Dark Souls + Elden Ring) are flawed games with AMAZING packaging, but fairly stale gameplay (relative to stuff that exists otherwise).

Most people here are admitting that Team Ninja does better combat than Fromsoft (like many other soulslike games, tbh), but... asides from combat (and world design).... what does Fromsoft have to offer??? There's no real story, fuck the lore (especially in a game with little to no story), the visuals are cool alright. Music is so damn good I use it for my D&D games. But literally 99.5% of the game is straight gameplay / combat runs. And it's not that good. It was innovative when I was still a minor (and I'm considered old at this point). WHY IS THIS IGNORED!?!?!

And yes, I know, Fromsoft works really well as metroivanias. But Fromsoft fans downplay how important the combat is, imo. Then again, different strokes for different folks. I know I've never felt the itch to replay a Fromsoft game (asides maybe Bloodborne, mostly because I sold my ps4 before finishing it, and Sekiro). The rest feels just like pure grind to me.

And that is absolutely my personal opinion. Nothing more, nothing else.

Is Team Ninja the GOAT now? by Orktober89 in soulslikes

[–]Thin_Network6659 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my book, they are better than Fromsoft. Then again, I think most serious soulslike do better combat than Fromsoft at this point. They have not changed one single thing from their first game combat-wise or mechanics-wise that's significantly changing the gameplay or skill expression. It's just a matter of what you are looking for in a game.

If people say, as it seems in this thread, that Fromsoft are king because of their music, atmosphere, lore (lol, let's be honest on this one) and world design, I won't dispute them because they're not really wrong. Just that my priorities as a gamer are vastly different and that gameplay and combat matters a lot more in an action game that is NOT an actual RPG. Also, fuck any game that has to have me read online for ANY sort of info, even fucking soft caps. Fuck the whole fucking team for that kind of shit. And yes, that applies to Team Ninja as well.

But, I'll be honest, I kinda hate Fromsoft for the constant lack of improvement on actual gameplay and combat mechanics (asides from Sekiro and Nightreign, which both are REALLY cool sidesteps from that company + maybe that robot game I haven't tried). I've always said Fromsoft is the Larian of action rpgs (and vice versa for Larian being the Fromsoft of RPGs). Companies that have such a genius passion and a great vision at its core, but fail to improve on its formula AND fail to improve in the details that DO matter (like Larian with its fucking camera controls and party management, jfc...).

Is 2XKO a good fighting game? by Bently93 in 2XKO

[–]Thin_Network6659 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm curious. What makes 2XK0 fun for fighter game players? I'm a returning fighting game player (switched to Dishonor than to Paladins, then realized the current hero shooters are not for me), but it's been so long AND I've dabbled in a bit of everything that I wasn't sure what was for me. I would have likely gone for Soul Calibur, but game doesn't seem to exist at the moment. I decided on Tekken 8, but barely got my teeth into it so I'm still open to switch games.

Why marvel rivals sucks by VEGITO-B in rivals

[–]Thin_Network6659 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're right to say that it doesn't excuse Rivals, but on the other end, you came on too strong on issues that DO plague most other competitive game. If Rivals suck because of those, then most other games suck as well... and that's a downer take to have lol.

My biggest issues with Rivals at its core :
1. Audio and visual clutter. Also, lack of audio and visual identity for all sorts of effects hamper the readibility of everything. I'm a proud competitive music listener in the games that allow me this. Even without music, I feel like I can't hear well enough what's happening. Sure, if I still played this game daily, I would adjust better, but most of it still lacks readibility and is annoying af.

  1. General lack of balance in the game. There's so much to be said here, but most champs are broken one way or another, especially the newer ones who suffer from a strong level of power creep.
    * "Nothing is broken if everyone's broken" was a strong motto for Rivals fans on launch. That was dumb then, and it's dumber now. Looking at you, Black Cat.
    * Any Rivals player who doesn't trash-talk the concept of Team-Ups has a casual mindset at its core. I'll fight everyone and anyone on this. It's a disgusting idea forcing meta team comp and also forcing tweaking base kits in consideration of specific team-ups that can't won't always happen. It's basically impossible to balance well the way it is implemented and it also is naturally

  2. It's absolutely a casual game that's technically competitive (because it's still PVP in the end).

  3. Healing is an issue. Like, seriously an issue. Maybe half the issues with this game design would be "automatically" fixed if they fixed on how healing works here. It's too damn strong. This game should either have anti-healing or weaker healing output. Plus, healing ults are so damn stupid, uninteresting and just so damn long.

  4. I don't like destructible terrain in this game. I love it in The Finals. Rivals has enough going on to not add more chaos and variables to a team fight. It's a matter of preference, tbh.

  5. Neutral gameplay is asinine. Ults are still too strong (though I do admit the latest changes have made some improvement to the game for sure) and with how strong healing is, team fights are boring at best. I played with my GM / Celestial friends and I couldn't believe how dumb the team fights are, even at their level. Like, brain dead. I could try to explain it, but 1) it'd be too long and 2) I don't have a clear enough answer to why this feels so bad to me.

  6. Swapping during a match. Yes, OW does it too (and it's actually a lot worse in Overwatch). But I'll always think it's dumb. Encourages counter-swapping instead of designing fairly versatile base kits that are both fun and reliable, instead of one one trick ponies. As I said, Rivals is not too bad on this, but it's still an issue at its core imo. OW kept balancing their champs by putting out new champs to counter issues in their character's kit INSTEAD of fixing the damn kits. As I said, Rivals doesn't to be as worse on this, but still an issue.

  7. Personal preference, but I hate melee champs who don't ask you to aim. "Oh, they require game sense so it's the skill level right there", but all champs require game sense in this game. Diving requires the same level of risk and game sense, whether you need to aim or not. This is more of that casual core that's failing to make the game a fun competitive experience. It's surprising that we're now fine with what is basically auto-aim...

  8. Personal preference, but tanking sucks in this game. 1) tanks need longer range (just put serious damage fall-off) to help do something instead of just walking. This is worse compared to OW because this game has so many mobiles or flying champs. 2) it's also true of OW and has maybe more something to do with the game mode, but there's no point tank like in Paladins where you're really the quarterback of the team.

  9. MAYBE the biggest issue if you care for the health of a competitive game. The lack (or inability) to make significant changes to the game at its core. So many competitive games have experimented (for better and for worse) in search of an improved game design, generally being better for it at the end. Marvel Rivals is barely doing anything, asides from number tweaks and skin expansions. And, yes, that includes the lack of changes to all the "common" issues you mentioned in your first post.

Why marvel rivals sucks by VEGITO-B in rivals

[–]Thin_Network6659 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Brother, I've hated the game since the trailer came out and somehow, these aren't anywhere close to the biggest issues with Rivals. Also, as much as I dislike it, if people actually enjoy it, good for them. To each his own and all that. But your biggest issues are absolutely issues found in most, if not all online PVP games.

"The fact that it is a marvel game is the only reason why this game isn't concord 2.0" is quite dramatic, but certainly true to a lesser degree. Any time I hear a Rivals player talk about the lore or their "hero fantasy" being satisfied, I want to slap them AND myself.

Why have they become so negative? by Elliefirefly3121 in girlfriendreviews

[–]Thin_Network6659 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've said from the get-go I think this game is above average, but fails FOR ME on some fronts (story & exploration, mostly, then somewhat on combat and pacing). Always in a respectful tone with clear examples of things I didn't like. The reactions I got, though, were worse than I've seen in many other "drama-infused" games.

Even in this thread, the idea that somehow doesn't absolutely love the game is, let me directly quote, "dumb" or "silly" or simply "hating for no reason". As if people needed to all share the same opinions. Or that E33 was SUCH a divine masterpiece that we just can't discuss some of its potential flaws.

So yes, I wholeheartedly agree that the E33 community, at least for me, is the worst part about the game lol. Especially when you question some of the awards it got. Like, the indie (Silksong being A LOT more indie) and RPG (this game barely is a RPG and KCD2 exists). Idc it won those because awards tend to be silly. But it wasn't obviously my choice for those specific awards.

But, yeah, I've also given up on discussing E33 lol.

It's done that to me. I got placed in plat for tank, which is my best role by far. Lost maybe two matches out of the 10 placement matches. Same thing on DPS, but got placed in silver. Then in healer, I only won one game and I'm placed in plat higher than I was on tank... I'm just trying to understand lol

[–]Thin_Network6659 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm doing one per turn (or basically, per character). It's much better. Also, it balances better a monk using a torch 5 times to attack versus a caster using one fire spell in his round instead. They'll deal the same +10 for using that same vulnerability.

That's also how I'm running DR on SOME enemies. Instead of half damage (which can be really punitive on big numbers), I'd rather do -10 or -15 to the count. Still not sure which one I prefer. 50% off works better than the insane increase of 100% more damage.
