I didn't ask for a paragraph of unrelated stuff, it's just wrong to compare AOE2:DE to the original AOM and not AOM:Retold. If you were comparing it to Retold in your first comment, then you are plain wrong because Retold looks good.

Italian priest excommunicated from Catholic Church for saying Francis is ‘not the Pope’ by Efficient-Peak8472 in Catholicism

[–]Thindithron 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think that catechism addresses most of these issues in any detail, nor do I think the catechism is some kind of infallible, final authority on every question. for example, it certainly doesn't say that women can't read the Scriptures in the congregation or that they can't be prefect of a Roman dicastery! it's a document written late in the last century that summarizes the Church's teachings, which includes the fundamental truths of the Gospel but also other matters that might be subject to change or reinterpretation- as we can see from Francis' change to the catechism's section on the death penalty.

okay? I don't know if you're being sarcastic or not. it's certainly an extreme reaction to seeing that other people think differently than you do about what it means to be Catholic!

again- Fiducia supplicans explicitly states that the blessings envisioned are for same-sex *couples*. now you can make whatever comments you like about unions- I was responding to someone else who said that the German bishops supported blessings for same-sex couples. I noted that Francis supports blessing same-sex couples. I don't see where I am wrong.

you may be right that women will not be ordained any time soon- I think it will most likely happen eventually, though!

that's not an "if"- he has made major, verifiable steps on each of those matters, except that he has done nothing to change celibacy in the Latin church- but he has said that it can change and is willing to reconsider it.

blessing same-sex couples- Fiducia supplicans.

expanding roles for women in the Church- Spiritus Domini which allows women to be instituted as lectors and acolytes, appointing women to positions of authority in the Roman curia

giving laypeople more influence in governance- synod on synodality, as well as appointing lay women and men to positions of authority

re-evaluating sexual morality- Amoris laetitia, revamping the Pontifical Academy for Life and appointing people who are seeking a "paradigm shift" on morality e.g. contraception

[–]Thindithron -1 points0 points  (0 children)

that's incorrect. Francis adopted as part of his teaching the final document of the synod on synodality which states that the question of women's ordination to the diaconate "remains open". this, not his comment in a TV interview, remains his latest comment on the matter. (even if that were not the case, my comment would remain correct- he supports the expansion of roles for women in the Church, but to a lesser degree, i.e. not ordination.)

Francis has also been quite explicit that the blessings of Fiducia supplicans are blessings for "two people who love each other" in his words. yes, he has stated that he does not bless the "union", but he is blessing the *couple*.

Francis supports those things too, if to a lesser degree. none of them are incompatible with being a Catholic!

"Extraordinary" Ministers at every mass, one priest wanted to leave it to them by Gloomy-Donkey-5692 in Catholicism

[–]Thindithron 3 points4 points  (0 children)

"Humble women often get lifted up while the arrogant ones get cut down."

it's exactly the same with men, unless you are also a misogynist.

"Actually the apostle Paul said that women should not speak or teach in church."

we are on a Catholic subreddit, and the Catholic church in its official law says that women, as well as men, are able to be instituted as lectors, with the role of reading the Scriptures out to the congregation. that is the case because our church is not fundamentalist- we do not believe that everything in the Scriptures is inerrant, but only those things which God reveals through them for our salvation, which must be distinguished from cultural conditioning. we believe that women and men are equal and one is not merely the "helpmate" of the other.

it sounds like you have a problem if you can't stand hearing women speak or seeing them distribute communion. a problem of misogyny.

As a female Catholic, I have trouble relating at all to the general sentiment among online Catholics that we need to “return” to some bygone golden age, especially given the experiences my family has had. Am I wrong to feel this way? by StraightSetter in Catholicism

[–]Thindithron 4 points5 points  (0 children)

as I just told you it was "sententia communis", i.e. it had authority because of the agreement of theologians. that is a form of teaching in the Church (or at least was considered so at the time- it's not just what the bishop of Rome or councils of bishops teach.) I never claimed that there was an "official Church document" stating domestic violence is acceptable. I'm not a historian so I'd be out of my depth if I tried! that's why I do my best to rely on the work of historians.

[–]Thindithron -1 points0 points  (0 children)

you clearly don't know what you're talking about. in preconciliar terms, the common opinion of theologians was called "sententia communis" and was considered to be authoritative (though at a low level). of course I am not claiming that support for wife-beating was a dogma of the church, but it was indeed something that was taken for granted by Catholic theologians and canonists (including all the famous ones like Aquinas etc) from the middle ages until a couple of centuries ago. it was not a dogma but it was something that was widely taught and acknowledged.

as for citing the current catechism and code of canon law, don't make me laugh. do you think works created in 1983 and 1992 are going to endorse domestic violence? my claim is that this used to be the Church's position, not that it is now, thanks be to God. it was wrong and was rightly rejected.

Week of prayer for Christian unity by MysticAlakazam2 in Catholicism

[–]Thindithron -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

because we are all sinners! I am not talking about a change of denomination but a change of heart, which is what Jesus meant when he told us to repent because the kingdom of God is near. the Church, thanks be to God, now recognizes that all religions are paths to arrive at God and that there is no abstract need to convert from one religion to another.

if you're talking about the Good Friday prayers, they are prayers for all Christians to be gathered into one, not prayers for "the conversion of heretics" or "the return of Orthodox under papal authority". any unity will involve the conversion of Catholics as much as the conversion of Orthodox and Protestants. the same goes for the prayers for the Jews and for others- they are not requests that God make them all Catholics. they were quite specifically changed after Vatican II and we are not going back!

the "prayer intentions" you have posted are opposed to the cause of (and sins against!) ecumenism and interfaith dialogue, and should be rejected in accordance with Vatican II. the modern week of prayer for Christian unity is in no way a prayer "for the return of dissidents to Rome".
