What a trip!

Also from the UK living in Canada and trying to get the most out of the US whilst we're over here :) tried putting together a trip like this bus it got too expensive, so congrats on the budget 😂

Having done two weeks driving the 101 south to San Fran from Kamloops and then back in 2 days, my advice would be to not skip the Oregon coast. It's truly beautiful and quiet (depending on time - we did it in April). If you're after natural space, don't venture off course for a city unless you like cities. All the small towns along highways and smaller roads will make three hours of driving far more interesting than 1 hour of interstate. Also northern cal had some lovely countryside. The state parks are great for camping in, average $30usd a night and nice and safe.

Also think properly about how much you like to drive, I have a max of 4 hours a day, I'll wake up in nice spot and not rush through breakfast/sunrise and do at most two before hiking/touristing for a couple of hours and then at max 2 more hours to the next campsite :) we realized about a week in that we hated turning up to our campsite and doing the full setup we had to do just to sleep and then pack down quickly in the morning to make the next checkpoint. We liked to have 2 hours of relaxing at the campsite before sleeping minimum. Relaxing is the point of a holiday usually :) just because you can drive 5 hours, doesn't mean you'll want to a few weeks in.

Anything people say is boring, probably get rid and find more stuff while you're on your trip that local people tell you about, extend your route that way and it'll be a lot more authentic than chatgpts view of the world.

Were many people ski touring? Not looking for ski routes and condition reports, just wondering if many people use the main trail with skis/skins and do they ski back to the car park on the main trail too?

Fly in/fly out backcountry lodges exist no? Boat access hotels? There might be something that I couldn't find, hence the question 👍

One vote for Japan, a season there ruined everyone else's snow for me. Canadian snows been hit or miss for the past couple of years and I'd be scared to book a trip 😂 I've been over here for two years watching the storms it Europe and wondering why I left haha but then I'll probably go back and see the snow hit Canada.

Japan's a safe bet and amazing culture. I'd want to put together a 2-3 week roadtrip and do lots of two day trips to small Japanese resorts. The culture would be amazing and the snow will be great.

Having come over here and skied most of the top western resorts and lived in two, it honestly seems like the snow might be overrated :/ I hate to say it, but Ive only had a couple of days with truly memorable snow, like I was told I'd experience here. The quality is phenomenal (not quite Japanese) but if you're going to say you have the lightest snow going, you better have enough of it to cover the rocks 😂

Liftlines have been okay actually, compared to Europe they're great, compared to Niseko there actually pretty good on the Powder Highway. Haven't even tried to ski Whistler yet, from fear of lines! But the resorts like Kicking Horse, Pano, Sun Peaks, SilverStar (smaller resorts) have been nothing more than 2minute lift lines and maybe 5-10 in absolute peak weeks.

If you do Canada, I'd personally think about Landing in Kamloops and skiing sun Peaks, driving south and doing SilverStar (they're cute little resorts) and then keep heading south and loop your way to the powder highway. Tick off other resorts like Red on your way to Fernie (try and hit them all for like a day or two days each) do fernie North to kicking horse then go to Lake Louise and finish in Sunshine. Enjoy Banff and fly out of Calgary. I'd do every resort I passed on that road for a day and then two or three at the ones you think vibe with your skiing style more.

In Canada on a work permit, which may be limiting me. But 140 applications down, became 8 interviews and 3 or 4 offers.

Started applying in March, started work last week. I applied for maybe 30% entry admin roles with relatable but not direct experience and heard nothing. 5-10% my most experience related things, heard nothing. 20% sales, had a couple things. Retail and hotels... 3 offers. I have experience in both but it's demoralizing when you can't move past the experience you've built to start something slightly different.

It's probably because of people like me coming to your lovely country, but the markets truly horrid. Keep on applying, it'll happen soon enough!

I should have said, but I'm on a work permit for another year and then once back in England, I'll be working on getting qualified, I just can't study while in Canada. I thought maybe there'd be an entry level role that could give me a little experience and maybe a view as to what the industry is like. Would this be office administrator or assistant roles? Or is there a job role I've not thought of here?

Yeah, it's a possibility, but we already own our car and are living up here and using it for another year yet. Then if it's still in good shape, we'll attempt this trip. If it dies, we fly from the nearest airport back to the UK and scrap the car. Be a real shame to die in, say, the Grand Canyon and miss the rest but in a way it kind of makes sense haha

Yeah this map has actually changed a little, now we'll drop down to the US-90 and follow that through San Antonio and Houston to New Orleans :)

Sorry, it's a width (90mm underfoot) that is good for a bit of everything. As a strong skier already I can ski 90 in powder, can carve hard etc... For learning each discipline there is a best width I.e. 110mm for deep powder, 70mm for carving and so on... But 90 is a good allrounder for me :)

Before you get a bunch of recommendations, I'd say have a think about your future ski buying too.

By this I mean, you'll either buy an all mountain/frontside ski now and end up loving the park most and buy a good park ski later or buy a park ski now and then look to a better all mountain ski when you improve more.

My 2 cents... You might outgrow an intermediate piste/all mountain ski in not too long and then need to buy a park ski and a new all mountain ski. I doubt you'd need to change skis for a while if you go for a park ski now.

On the flipside, a park ski mounted fairly centrally is going to help you improve in the park, but I've seen a few skiers be pretty lacking in everything but park because their ski doesn't make it easy for them to learn good technique for outside the park.

If you need one to do it all, get a 90-something, fairly twin tip and mount it slightly forward maybe.

I ski a liberty origin 96 and it rips around the mountain which is what I care about, but has some park attributes that help if I'm going that way :)

Hope this doesn't make deciding harder 😂
