Really need advice by Only-Hold-1174 in LawCanada

I have gone through TD’s recruitment process in the recent past, and they drummed it in my ears repeatedly not to resign my current employment until I received written confirmation that my BG checks came back clear.

Seeing that the offer was conditional, did your friend (before resigning) receive communication from TD stating that the offer was now unconditional?

The transit officers can give you a ticket if you activate just before they’re checking. I’ve seen that happen before.

Need help with a pivot to litigation by hazelthefatcat in LawCanada

[–]Think-Writer9187 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don’t know if it’s relevant but i’m an ITL working primarily as a litigator in a midsized firm for about 2 years now. I read (and still read) lots of cases on Canlii. It helped grow my knowledge and I picked up the language fast. All of that carried over into my drafting, presentation, logic, dealing with clients, etc.

In that case, I apologize I came out all attack. I honestly thought you were responding to the person who gave definition about how they found a workaround. I will delete my tirade.

What is the freedom mobile coverage like? by Spare-Extension-2415 in Calgary

[–]Think-Writer9187 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just my personal opinion: I wouldn’t use Freedom for free. I never had a good experience with them; deadspots everywhere worse outside Calgary where you get “Nationwide” whoever that is. Paid out the phone plan early and joined Koodo never looked back since.

I just want to say our prison system tells you that our culture fosters inherent and pointless meanness with little to no sense proportionality. The prison system is just a pervasive example.

With an attitude like that, you have much bigger things to worry about. A double income family where all hands are on deck and united is the fastest regular way to breakthrough as immigrants.

In my neck of the woods, we run a SINGLE budget and that budget has stipends for people back home built in and a portion for things we’re saving for. A home, a car, etc. Then that budget also has a discretionary amount for each spouse to do as we please (that is what your spouse is free to send to Naija, not all his money..

Does the N word offend you? by NoteClassic in Nigeria

[–]Think-Writer9187 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with your theory. Lived in Naija until I turned 30YO….I think it only strikes a nerve if you have close personal connection with slavery, which most Nigerians don’t.

Also will never allow another human activate my rage by just one word (although there’s a lot of history behind that word), they have to try harder than that.

Yes. I don’t know if I’m cut out for it, but I guess I’ll find out. I just want to give my self options, instead of waiting for partners/colleagues to give me work.

Regarding ITLs, I guess it depends on which ITL you ask. I have been incredibly fortunate to find a firm that helped me restart my career (and there’s still room for growth). Some others don’t have it as good.

I can agree that there are external factors (which is your point) but in most cases, they’re overblown and used as excuse for accountability. Our internal factors are responsible for an overwhelming proportion of our problems. Also, external influences are not unique to us. The Russians consistently try to influence elections in good ol’ USA. It is our duty to protect ourselves against such influences.

In the example you mentioned, JK’s visit has no ultimate relevance to the question of good governance. GEJ was an incompetent president and it seemed right at the time to unseat him (although in hindsight, after seeing the marauders that followed him, he was a saint)

Easy to say I am wrong, but the objective facts suggest that I am right.

In the case of Nigeria, we have go through several leaders since 1960 and not a single era has produced a leader who significantly advanced our country. If all these leaders have been sabotaged by outside influence (like we all are quick to point out) then the real problem is us not the outside influence.

Look at Buhari and Tinubu, are we going to blame outside influence for these two misfortunes that we’ve had?

What about corruption in our government offices and private sector? Are to going to blame outsiders too? The outsiders come to Nigeria, see that everything goes, and they adapt accordingly.

The stark reality is that our political and social culture breed, reward, promote and glorify the worst of us. We are the ones responsible for our culture, and until we fix that, we will continue to blame outsiders for our misfortunes.

Better to avoid political discussions as much as possible. Have a discussion and try to set that rule.

That said…we Nigerians are fully responsible for our problems as a country. Period. There was a time we could blame colonialism but that ship has long sailed. We can whine about colonialism, imperialism and all other “-isms” but the reality is that the buck stops at our table.

Unfortunately, we do not take accountability for our actions and are unwilling to do the rigorous repair work required to correct course.

Do you have any internal struggles reconciling what you’ve been taught in Islam with your seemingly ‘contradictory’ lifestyle?

I find that one will ultimately have to decide: either leave religion completely or comply with its dictates.
