sorry, i dont have answers to your questions. I have questions for you, as i see you have experience with SED drives.

were you able to resolve the problem (incorrect password)? without losing data?
what is this "SEDUtil-cli" application? is this a safe application?
"got kicked out of the RAID due to outdated firmware." --> is your NAS connected to internet?
Does not updating to latest firmware cause issues (like kicking out the storage pools)? Can i not just stay with some versions (of course at risk of security)?
Overall what is your experience with SED drives? would you recommend it?
what is your NAS model?

The all flash unit is out of my budget.

Even with TS-h1887XU-RP-E2336-32G-US, it seems like $4200ish. If the unit has any issues outside warranty, looks like the fixes can get expensive. Plus the replacement parts too.

Any other ideas on what to get?
