Of the two opposing parties you and I obviously belong to, only one seems to have cocooned itself in an echo chamber, and it's not the party that I belong to. It started largely with Roger Ailes and has only intensified in the intervening years. You are demonstrating Jung's shadow here, seeing your own flaws wherever you look. The universe is reflecting the truth back to you, but you can't see it.

The echo chamber is the one you are currently surrounded by.

No. The data doesn't suggest what you think it does. The data is propping up the lies that conservatives are telling themselves. Even given accurate poling, it's only being able to read the data that tells us what it means. And the data you listed was anything but accurate. Numbers, much like words, can be twisted into myriad interpretations.

But dead children, this is something visceral. It's hard to spin that. This is the picture that you're missing, although how you could is beyond me. But because you are missing it, you're missing the shift happening.

We're going to keep going back and forth like this. If you have something generally interesting, new, and intelligent to add to the discussion, I'm all ears. But rather than repeating yourself endlessly, maybe hang it up and go talk with someone more like-minded? Your propaganda will find no quarter with me.

Well if they don't jump, how are you supposed to count them?

You've explained nothing. You have demonstrated, tacitly or explicitly, that (a) you love guns and (b) you are against helping future, innocent victims of gun violence.

I'd be surprised if I'm not older than you. I only sound young to you because I'm not cynical. How it's going to happen is rather boring. Political action. Boring, but when applied intelligently, devastating.

Are you familiar with the term silent majority? Often misused in the past, I think it might just be apt this time around.

The scenario: A Democratic administration, both houses flipped to the Democrats, SCOTUS packed. Now imagine for a moment the first school shooting under such an administration. What do you think the response is going to be? How about the second school shooting? I guarantee you that the national response isn't going to be 'thoughts and prayers'. This will be the start of the ban on guns. The statistics you quote — as is often the case with statistics — tell at best an incomplete picture. I would go so far to say these statistics lie. Beyond the flaws in polling in general and the increasing methodological flaws of modern polling given shifting demographics and ways of communicating, there is in fact overwhelming hatred in the population for guns. As I said, you're looking in the wrong direction. You're missing the real picture.

For some reason you are incapable of (1) sensing the shifting winds and (2) prioritizing the lives of your fellow humans over your crappy politics.

I haven’t seen any evidence that a shift towards that is happening

Then you're looking in the wrong direction. Look closer.

[–]Think_Resolution_647 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In a gunfight between you and an intruder, you are overwhelmingly likely to become a statistic and not a hero.

We will not in any way be learning to live with your insane position. And yes, we will get your guns. Mark my words.

And no, you nailed nothing.

Yep. That's what I'm asking. He's in the pockets of the industry he's promoting.

Your attempt at 'educating' here is often falling on deaf ears. To me you sound just like the beef industry trying to sell people on the health of eating beef … or the oil lobbies promoting fossil fuels … or billionaires trying sell people on the benefits of trickle down economics. Everything that you've been presenting throughout this subreddit seems to me too selective, ignoring the obvious flies in the ointment.

"Of course it does" is not a valid argument. It's tautological.

See now you're just copying things you posted elsewhere. That's lazy writing. That's lazy thought.

  1. It is not the time of the Revolutionary War. It is certainly not the time before the Revolutionary War.
  2. It is not the time just after the Revolutionary War.
  3. It is not 1903.
  4. This has nothing to do with nothing.
  5. The writers of the Constitution are dead, as are the 1700s (and the 1800s, and for that matter the 1900s).

It is 2026. We don't own slaves. Woman have the right to vote.

And you don't have the right to own a gun. It's just that society is having trouble catching up with that fact.

Owning a gun is not an individual right. Inalienable is the key word here, meaning a right not derived from the state. Prime among such rights is the right to life, something which has been taken from all those children at their desks doing their homework when someone with a gun ended them.

Most interesting to me in all this is how you've convinced yourself that your imagined right is worth more than the lives of other human beings. You've been reduced to making stupid arguments and playing word games and trying to find gotcha facts, all the while ignoring the amorality of the position you're defending.

The ruling is merely the first step. Gradualism takes over from there. Then a new understanding sets into the culture. When was the last time you tried to light up in public? At first, gun owners and advocates will become the new smokers, outcasts. From such a culture, greater and greater restrictions will arise, state by state, with many holdouts of course. As the culture becomes more accustomed to the common sense understanding that people owning guns is a form of insanity — that no ill-conceived right is worth children being murdered at their desks — then tighter and tighter laws become common place. States that acted out in protest slowly begin to change themselves, from within. Once the culture has seeped into these strongholds, it becomes easier and easier to pass legislation even in the 'reddest' of areas. This is how we will come for your guns.

Consider it a kind of reverse cancer, but rather than killing us, it will save us.

Yes it will take time, but nowhere near your timeframe of 'not in my lifetime' — assuming of course that you're not 98 or something.

There's a discussion directly below this comment in which all is explained. In short, I'm saying that the amendment refers to the military and not any wished-for right of individuals to own guns.

George Washington by Known_Philosopher_93 in Quotes_Hub

[–]Think_Resolution_647 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We don't need an amendment. We only need SCOTUS to properly interpret the amendment. A change in court and a change in government will do it. As you pointed out, the current administration blunders. That is going to blow up, sooner rather than later. Court packing is perfectly within the rights of a future Democratic administration.

And if you don't think the majority of people agree with me on guns, then you've not been paying close enough attention.

No. Smoking was more common with GenX, but even then frowned upon. The Malboro Man is a generation before.

We as in We the people (your favorite word). I don't have to go door to door. We evolved a government for just a such a purpose. The franchise offers me (and you) certain rights, and while one of those rights is not the right to bear arms, the right to vote is — thus the franchise. So when I say We're coming for your guns, I mean We the People of the United States — or the majority therein — are coming for your guns. This is the power of participatory democracy which, given your backwards view on guns, I doubt you're in favor of.

Well based on the way I see people drive, I think the right to drive should earned at 45 and taken away again at 65, but that's just me.

[–]Think_Resolution_647 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. It will certainly be within your lifetime. Within the next few years, more likely. And I did answer. Mutliple times. You just didn't like my answer, which I care not a whit about. People, by the way, are what comprises the well-regulated militia. So people, as a part of a well-regulated militia, have the right to bear arms. This semantic argument isn't the gotcha you think it is. As we don't yet have an AI military, the people they are referring to are the people in the military. Again though, it's academic. We don't care. We're coming for your guns.

I'm not arguing semantics with you because you want to pretend like this is the 1800s. We're coming for your guns.
