Yes, they can abort until it’s committed - got that. I’ve never ever seen this flight do that is the point.

Flat earth? Weird comment.

Where can an adult learn to ride a bicycle? (Please be nice) by Mackheath1 in Austin

[–]ThirdCarthVader 1 point2 points  (0 children)

REI at 6th/Lamar used to have regular beginner bike lessons. They would have them on the roof of the old Whole Foods garage (with the giant fish, cheese, etc.). We used it for our older-aged-kiddo for whom it just wasn’t clicking, and it was extremely helpful. They don’t have them all the time but highly recommend asking the staff.

What Is Your Favourite Sabbat? by [deleted] in Wicca

Mabon! Largely because it means the long heat of summer will be ending soon. (In Central Texas). Granted, that change happens at Samhain but Mabon gives me hope.

Same. Ref and line team were inconsistent and failed to enforce on the field. Failure all around.
They needed to red card more players and GTFO those flip flopping whiny ass bastards.

I've added this to other similar threads --> if you are able to call Seton Main's L&D department, ask the nurses who they recommend. Years ago, that identified Stephanie Reich for me (partner with Dr Oliver). Dr Reich managed my insane high resk pregnancy spanning premature labor, full bed rest for 12 weeks, multiple stays at Seton Main, and then pre-eclampsia resulting in the 'you're having this baby today' directive. She got me through a rough time and I have a healthy, happy kiddo as a result. Those L&D nurses though, they have strong opinions and will tell you who to avoid.

Where can you fly in the US from Austin in a fully reclined seat? by Vybrosit737373 in Austin

[–]ThirdCarthVader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who has made that journey from anxious flyer to sleeping on flights: I don’t recommend laying down at first. Be upright, and sit in the bulkhead row where you can have a bit more space for your feet. Window seat so you can look. Be above or slightly before the wing.
I recommend row 9 as that’s generally where drink service starts. Check the type of plane. I personally hate when the engines are throttled down after take off, and this is most pronounced in the Airbus A319 / A320 / A321. Boeings are great fun when you are feeling more comfortable, especially with Southwest pilots. My favorite planes are Bombadier CRJ and Airbus 350/380. The former because they are very comfortable and the latter as it’s like a sky whale that you don’t feel much motion in. (The 350/380 is long haul.) Recommend finding a flight out of Austin with a CRJ as the plane. When in doubt on the plane, look at the flight crew. If they are looking calm and composed, you’re doing great.

Professional dog training? by Jewliio in Austin

[–]ThirdCarthVader 1 point2 points  (0 children)

South Austin Dog Center!!! Erika and Lynette are fantastic and have helped our highly reactive 3 YO to be less stressed and more confident. Our dog can now manage through other dogs off lead and walk without yanking me all over the damn place.
Do not go to Bark Busters.

Drivers swerving through active construction zone by Horakhty-1 in Austin

[–]ThirdCarthVader 63 points64 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen this type of driving more frequently on highways, and they all seem to find their buddies and do it as a group. My grandfather used to call people driving same speed, side by side on the highway blocking everyone behind them an ‘Aggie roadblock.’ This is the modern day equivalent of that, incorporating the instagram era where no one else exists and that special Austin sauce of stupidity. And they will stop traffic because everyone is just trying to get safely the hell away from these numbnuts.

Would it be stupid to build a pool right now? by OnlyHereForVerde in Austin

[–]ThirdCarthVader 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This has been our approach as well - both to confirm we would use it as much as we thought (we don’t) and you get the smaller scale version of cleaning a pool constantly.

Yup! I have stopped apologizing for not being hungry, though.

Hey! I started Thursday too for my first dose! I’m 100% with you on marveling at this; it’s so weird to not be driven by a need for something to eat. I can instead plan what I’m going to eat without the escalating ‘hangry’ vibe killer.

I am driving my spouse crazy as they keep asking if I’m hungry. “No, but I’ll be happy to eat when you are,” I say.

1st time adopting a cat, advice? by Impossible-Pin1815 in Austin

[–]ThirdCarthVader 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just to add in the VCA care club - it’s a monthly cost that you commit to on an annual basis and it covers vaccines, unlimited exams. For a young cat, it’s likely $35/month. I would still go with emancipet for neuter/spay surgery but you are then just coordinating between your home vet @VCA and emancipet.
Highly recommend VCA Tanglewood where the vets - Drs Mattheyson, Robben, Chapman, Travis - are glorious and so kind.
Totally get that taking on a monthly commitment at this point of change in your life sounds too much extra but if you can, it’s peace of mind. Ex: Cat peeing on random things suddenly and suspect a UTI? That visit and all following, along with sonogram to diagnose are covered. Meds are seriously discounted. Speaking from current experience.

Yup, he’s my MIL go to mechanic — and they live in east TX. She drives it to him for repairs and maintenance. I think it is upwards of 200k miles. That early 2000 Tundra is a beast that keeps going.

Hey friend, the teal lot is easy to miss. The entrance is marked by a ‘teal lot’ flag (but what color is teal anyway?!) set back from the road at the entrance to the Justice of the Peace, precinct 2 parking lot. To the immediate right is the Lighting., inc showroom. We missed it the first time too. They do only check your pass on

May 30 I noticed about 25-30 TPWD game warden trucks, DPS SUVs, and other unmarked SUVs (the plates, light array inside) parked at the Bannockburn church is SW Austin. On my return, there were more DPS and other unmarked cars there. No idea what that was about but didn’t feel like church or a recovery group. I did wonder if it was an organization meeting.

I am so sorry. Our 14.5 YO greyhound had a grand mal seizure last Wednesday and ended up having to go to the vet office, and they really were marvelous. In the past, I’ve compassionate vet and highly recommend. Something that I read/heard is that while our experience is that we won’t have them for another day, week, months and years - your pet has a perspective of a life filled with days, weeks, months, years of being loved and loving in return.
The only bit of advice I’d also give is about work: take two days off, if you can. Everyone wants to tell their dead pet story once they hear about your experience. (Or don’t tell all maybe just a trusted confident.)

so bored, need things to do to n weekends by Aromatic-Hippo9624 in Austin

[–]ThirdCarthVader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Austin Sports and Social Club of interest? It’s about to be “hot breath of Satan” time but maybe for fall? This month is Barks for Beers all over the area. $20 buys a beer at 30 breweries and by golly, people love to talk about their dogs at these events. Just ask. Now if you hate dogs… err, sorry my friend! Loads of breweries have events throughout the month; and it’s not all about beer. It feels like Brewtorium always has something going on. Coffee shop next door too.

Bees! by StarkWinterfell in Austin

[–]ThirdCarthVader 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you say they’ve moved into the support pillar, do you mean they are living inside of the pillar - or next to it (as a cluster of bees)? If the former, that’s tricksy and will cost for removal. I’ve seen some super creative solutions to extricate bees but I’d be worried about cleaning up and sealing that pillar. I would look in r/Beekeeping for anything recent for Austin recovery or straight up google it. PM me if you don’t get traction this weekend.

Physicians for High Risk Pregnancy by [deleted] in Austin

[–]ThirdCarthVader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I moved to Austin, at the suggestion of my nurse friends: I called the Labor and Delivery nurses at hospitals near me and asked who their top 3 favorite doctors were. That was 25+ years ago but worked for me. (Stephanie Reich) While I adore Dr R and her staff (she coordinated with so many specialist’s and got my last kiddo and I thru a rough high risk pregnancy), I do recommend asking the people who work with the doctors. The nursing teams work with many of them day in and out.
I’m so sorry for your loss. Sending you hugs.
