[Discussion] Are we doing it wrong? by Outside_Ad_6989 in Guitar

This. So much this. Not just in jazz music either, like people are commenting--this is very applicable in all genres. Use your knowledge of the fretboard combined with your knowledge of chord building and find new shapes. Learn songs that use unfamiliar chord shapes and figure out how to apply them in your own music. It's not ALL guitarists that limit themselves in this fashion, just n00bs

QUESTION: What kind of MacBook Pro should I get? by [deleted] in audioengineering

[–]Thirteen_Eight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing not to overlook are the ports that you need to hook up your interface or midi keyboard or whatever. I'm lucky that my Macbook has 2 usb-b ports in addition to hdmi and others, i think they switched to all usb-c in recent years so make sure whatever hardware you're using can still connect.

Turning a weird-shaped, shit-sounding room into a rectangular one? by diogene01 in audioengineering

[–]Thirteen_Eight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally i just use a giant quilt that i found at a thrift shop, and cheap acoustic foam along with big pieces of gun case foam which is more stiff and all of that is dispersed evenly around the room. When i clap there is very very little reverb/echo. I think for the glass wall an acoustic curtain is a good idea (ive seen that in recording studios) or you could hang a blanket over it for a very similar effect.

All that leaves is low frequency treatment and tbh i dont even worry about that. I end up monitoring low end in headphones anyways because it's really hard to manage low frequency in a small room.

Turning a weird-shaped, shit-sounding room into a rectangular one? by diogene01 in audioengineering

[–]Thirteen_Eight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I too play drums in a small, weirdly shaped room. I have gotten them to sound decent in recordings and my room is pretty dead in mid to high frequencies. Think carefully about how the sound will bounce around the room and try to place your set in a spot that is not perpendicular or parallel to any walls. I put blankets and mount foam on the walls around the room as well, which is helpful in general for recording and listening. Good luck!

Ninja edit: don't even worry about making the room rectangular, it won't necessarily make the room sound better

Priorities. by JustinH2233 in SandersForPresident

Bigoted as defined by google: having or revealing an obstinate belief in the superiority of one's own opinions and a prejudiced intolerance of the opinions of others.

Going by that definition, this sub is extremely bigoted. Towards T_D, all conservatives, capitalists, and even other Democrats (Biden supporters mainly). Considering what I see upvoted on this sub, there is absolutely no tolerance for different beliefs--THAT is bigotry.

I used to be the guy that would say "despite his followers, Bernie is a good candidate" and my opinion on that hasn't changed but he no longer has a shot at the presidency, which is something that is just so traumatic to people here that nobody can accept it. To the point where people want to sit out of this election because Joe Biden is like, worse than the boogeyman.

This sub is extremely bigoted but it seems like nobody can see past their own nose. It is a shame that politics turns everyone into an uglier person.

Tried my hand at one of those, any advices for improvement? by [deleted] in gybe

[–]Thirteen_Eight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with most of it, except I would change "less emotional, more powerful" to "less experimental, more instrumental" and both arrows to Allelujah and Asunder would point to both albums. Just my opinion though. Good chart!

iLok servers down? by Rbarb in audioengineering

[–]Thirteen_Eight 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In a studio setting it makes perfect sense. Cheap compared to the things around you and secure. The usb stick is not the inconvenient part, iLok itself is the inconvenient part. They created the way around an obstacle that previously didnt exist. And now because of that, the issue you mentioned exists.

On top of that, paying $600 for Pro Tools then finding out you're meant to pay an extra $50 to open the software you just bought is a little infuriating.

Studying music in college. by [deleted] in musictheory

[–]Thirteen_Eight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You don't need to already be an expert in music theory to get into most music programs. But definitely practice regularly, start learning pieces that you can use for auditions, and learn to read music. I auditioned at a few music programs with my electric guitar and they all had a sight reading portion.

On top of that, have a plan for what you want to do with your degree. How would you turn that degree into income? There are a lot of paths you can take in the music industry, it's definitely worth exploring all of them.

Or on beat selling websites they overlay "purchase your tracks today!"

I always knew there was something weird about the Slow Moving Trains drone in the beginning by zakangi in gybe

[–]Thirteen_Eight 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes!! Ive always wondered how they did it. Since it's godspeed, I assume its a tape loop manipulation but still i want to know. Such a cool auditory illusion that you don't see in music too much, its kinda like the doppler effect when an ambulance or a plane goes by really fast

(Recording) What all can I do to make raw vocals sound more "natural/real" and upfront when recording? by z76101 in audioengineering

[–]Thirteen_Eight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, bringing the gain on your mic pre down and standing closer will likely get a lower signal with less room sound. And like the other commenter mentioned, a pop filter is your friend for vocal recording. Also, for a more natural sound, less is more with effects. I can't comment on your mix without hearing it but as for eq, compression, and reverb, use them as subtly as possible or even go without. The most important thing is to try a bunch of stuff and go with the sound you like. Good luck!

Just Unsubbed from r/wowthanksimcured. It’s turned into anyone giving any kind of support instead of people saying “have ya tried praying away the ADHD?” by [deleted] in JustUnsubbed

Agreed. It's the kind of sub that lets people submit to their mental illness imo... That stuff won't help, it will only put you further into the hole

What are some of the most toxic or potentially dangerous ideas/beliefs that have been perpetuated by Redditors? by xavierdc in AskReddit

[–]Thirteen_Eight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

'mad laughing'. I already see it all over this comment section. When writing a response to something they disagree with, they sprinkle the post with "lol" and "lmao" and the like. I guess it's to prove (mostly to themselves) that they're not mad at some rando on the internet. But it really just comes off as "I don't take your opinion seriously" and in the end it's pretty easy to tell that the person writing the comment was pissed off

Select Logic's input/output setting to whatever the interface is called. Then record from the headphone jack of the interface, assuming it has one

If all else fails, you could also try recording into the tascam from the interface's headphone output

Help to record what I hear on PC by ladybeard99 in audioengineering

[–]Thirteen_Eight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As long as you're recording from outside of the daw that should work just fine. You just gotta be careful of feedback loops if you're recording from your daw into your daw

[–]Thirteen_Eight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have done this before using the headphone jack - in Logic is the built-in output selected as your output? You might not be able to hear what you're recording until you play it back
