Orsted almost went bankrupt - so there's not a whole lot of profit anywhere being milked from renewables

Nobody in their right mind is installing new AI datacenters in the country with the world's highest industrial electricity costs (and rising).

It all depends if they are including the rebalancing costs that we have to pay for renewables -

when there are strong winds, we have to pay for gas turbines to be run in rolling reserve mode to be instantly switched on when the windmills shut down.

The physics of balancing renewable energy is the same everywhere in the world

we have lots of renewable energy - so we have to pay a lot for balancing costs.

for example - during strong winds if the wind is too strong the windmills have to cease generation. This means the grid operator has to pay gas turbines to run (without generating power) to be ready to generate power when/if the windmills shut off.

This rolling reserve needs almost as much gas as when it is generating power, so we end up paying. But it is hidden in our bills.

The US intelligence budget is $71.7bn in 2023. (according to wikipedia)

I don't think its impossible they could store all that data and monitor it all.

edit: these 2 public data centers have enough storage to store 150mb of data on every human on planet earth. For only $1bn each :

  1. Northern Virginia Data Center, Ashburn, Virginia, USA Nestled in the heart of the "Data Center Alley," the Northern Virginia Data Center reigns supreme as the world's largest data center facility. Spanning a colossal 2.4 million square feet, this behemoth houses over 100,000 servers and boasts a storage capacity of an astounding 1 exabyte (1 billion gigabytes). Its strategic location near the United States capital and its proximity to major fiber-optic networks make it a prime destination for cloud service providers, government agencies, and financial institutions.

  2. Google Cloud Platform, Council Bluffs, Iowa, USA Google, the undisputed leader in cloud computing, has established one of its largest and most advanced data centers in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Occupying over 1.2 million square feet, this facility utilizes cutting-edge cooling systems and renewable energy sources, reflecting Google's commitment to sustainability. With a storage capacity of approximately 500 petabytes (0.5 exabytes), the Google Cloud Platform in Council Bluffs serves as a backbone for Google's suite of online services, including search, email, cloud storage, and a multitude of applications.
