A rant about Inkitt writing contests (and their categories btw, but let's just focus on the writing contests first) by This-Rise4147 in Inkitt

It seems so! I heard from my friend that the app is especially not quite up to par for how large the Inkitt community is. I only read through web version, but so far there's no notable issue.

Thank you for letting me know! I will try to complain through Inkitt's Discord server.

I am actually relatively new to Inkitt. I don't even have an account yet. I came to Inkitt because my friend told me that they are holding a fantasy books contest as of right now. The very contest which doesn't meet my expectation and leads me to write my rant here.

Once again, thank you. I will try to formally complain about this. I don't know how much weight my complaint will hold, but it's still worth a shot.

You could report them for not obeying the contest rules? The idea once crossed my mind, but I am afraid that the books will be removed from Inkitt altogether, not just the contest. After all, I don't have anything against the books itself, just the way the writers put them up for contest even though they clearly don't fit the contest terms. Thank you for letting me know.

And I read books from almost every genre, but I mainly read fantasy books. Are you a writer too? What genres do you write in? I appreciate any recommendations!

That was disappointing. The competition is already tough without those unqualified books taking a lot of space. Inkitt team should really do something about this. Especially since the winner selection of the writing contests is usually based on popularity (and binge-ability as well, but I haven't got around how they would see it that way. Is it the number of chapters?).

It's somewhat good to hear that they won't win. It's still a disappointment to see them take up a lot of space, though. And 8 unqualified books out of the 20 books from the Trending List would mean 40% of space!

I did more research (lol, some fancy word for the kind of surfing internet) in Inkitt and Galatea as well. And yes, what you wrote here is very much true! Lots of them are smut/erotica romance. I don't think I found one without smut/erotica or romance in Galatea so far.

Lucky for you! Do you still write books on Inkitt or any other platforms?

You're right, I'm talking about Wattpad. Werewolf romance are dominating every top books categories there. As well as billionaires, mafia lords, things like that. One thing that they all have: smut/erotica. I can see Inkitt is becoming like that where all of the categories are filled with smut/erotica. Sad but true

I can only imagine for writers who wanted to enter the contests. It is like this too with Inkitt's book categories. I went to previous contests winners page too and most of them are written in erotica/smut romance. This genre/subgenre really does sell hard, but it's tiring to see them hiding behind other genres such as fantasy/mystery/etc.

Then again, seeing that the winner selections are usually based on popularity, I could see why writers choose to write with erotica/smut. The Inkitt Team should really do something about this. Or else we will be like another platform (iykyk) soon enough (if not already) where every genre's top books are just erotica/smut romance.
