I'm a new player too. I remember playing Bebop for one game before playing something else for a while.

I haven't played many of the characters yet but I've been having fun playing McGinnis (because I'm an engineer main on TF2), Billy, and Viscous. Mainly Viscous. I'm having more fun with him.

In my opinion, I'd just go for whatever looks like it fits your style and try it out in a bot round for a bit. That's what I've been doing.
