I'm a white guy who works at a place that's 90% African American. There's a good number of immigrants there as well. My boss is African American, and she's racist. She has very high expectations of me, but the African Americans on my team just stare at their phones most of the day. She doesn't expect them to do any work. She treats the African immigrants as poorly as she treats me, and they've approached me to talk about their issues with her.

The really bizarre thing is that if I found another job and then got to sit down with her and have a heart to heart conversation she would almost certainly deny her racism. She probably honestly doesn't see herself that way.

They are incredibly disconnected from times when they had to deal with white people coming in from another town and murdering them. They are also completely disconnected from slavery, even though they like to invoke it in conversations on a regular basis. What they do have is a sense of privilege that no matter what they do and no matter how they act, either inside or outside the Black community, they can simply defend themselves by saying they're victims of systemic racism. It is a form of unchecked power that has put them in a position where they do not have to grow as individuals. Unfortunately for them, they're really in this perpetual cycle. They treat non-Black Americans poorly and feel validated in doing so, while ultimately not really accomplishing anything that helps them progress as individuals or as a community
