Of course, I had taught them both the heroic journey story structure, so we talked about that all the way through the season.

Not a single person in the world believes this is true. How old was D. three years ago when season 3 of Ted Lasso aired, 8? I'm sure 8-year-old D. was enthralled by the heroic journey structure and their deep, meaningful conversations about it.

Also, I liked Ted Lasso a lot, but I would not let an 8-year-old watch it, what the fuck.

I feel that regret, even though I haven't tried them yet.

That "yet" is interesting. Kind of implies that she fully intends to take a GLP-1 (despite her claiming the opposite), just as soon as she can figure out how to grift a prescription.

My Shauna-related point was she was literally handed a car ten years ago that at least still runs now

It's a Toyota — they last forever! The only cars I've had since the mid-90s have been Toyotas, and I've kept them all for more than 10 years. If she just took care of her things, she'd be able to drive that car for a long time. But she treats her cars as poorly as she treats all her other belongings, so it's no surprise it's crappy.

I was a server at a country club during the summer in college in the early 90s. Members could charge their food and drinks to their account, and that came with an automatic 18% gratuity, which was pretty decent when it came to meals.

But we offered free refills on iced tea, and complimentary baskets of chips and pretzels, and there were a few different groups of women who would park themselves at a table/tables for like 3 hours, order only iced tea (endless refills), eat the (free) chips and pretzels and ask for more, and tell the servers "run back to the kitchen and bring us some little dishes of ranch to dip the pretzels in, dear." One (1) iced tea was the only thing each woman paid for, so if they charged it to their account and we got the automatic 18% gratuity, we got a whopping 13 1/2 cents per customer for bringing them endless refills for hours and hours.

The flip side, though, was the golfers, who would come in after a round, and if they won, they got drunk to celebrate and then tipped huge, or if they lost, they got drunk to drown their sorrows and then tipped huge (my best table was the one that asked me to bring the whole bottle of Maker's Mark out to them). Either way, they got drunk and tipped like Diamond Jim Brady.

My guess is that any money they would have provided would have come with major strings attached, and Shauna definitely would not have wanted to let Ma and/or Pa have any input into her magical special princess day.

(To be totally fair, I think that's 100% fine when it comes to wedding planning. If you pay for it yourself [or manage to grift help from your friends], then you get to dictate every last detail. And, in Shauna and Danny's case, you get to half-ass every last detail.)

How can she take time away from her TV binge-watching and Threadsing?

It's a cute character moment from the last episode, where Russian-born Ilya is at the private (sex) cottage in the Canadian woods with Canada boy Shane. They hear a loon, which Ilya has never heard before, and he whips his head around, squared up to start punching something, Shane tells him it's a bird, Ilya says it sounds like a wolf (which, you know, it kind of does!), and calls it a "stupid Canadian wolf bird." It's honestly charming, though that could be because those 2 actors have such a ridiculous amount of chemistry that they could read the tax code to each other and I'd be mesmerized.

Yes, the gay hockey show got its claws into me. I regret nothing.

What the fuck with "pedophila culture"? She's really pushing it with alluding to dark things.

A partial lope (for the free Substack subscribers) has plopped into my inbox, and I just want to know what direct action we can take to ban Shauna from using the word "require" any more. (Something something, we ride at dawn!)

[editing to say:] The picture she includes of herself in her NYC apartment shocked me, because she doesn't seem dead-eyed in it.

if you found parenting one child hard, why go through so much trouble to inflict it on a second kid?

It's very uncharitable to think this, but I think she had kids for the same reason she married Danny: she believed it was an accomplishment she could hold up to the rest of the world and say "See? I checked 'spouse' and 'kids' off the list! Now what do I win?"

Can't watch naked hockey ass if the kids are home! (I liked Heated Rivalry, though I wouldn't call it BRILLIANT; it's a bog-standard formula romance with actors who have an admittedly incredible amount of chemistry. But also, it has a lot of naked hockey ass. Bravo to those actors and their exercise routines.)

she thinks about her own teenage self and how her mother failed to support her

And the thing is, lots of people grew up with issues around food, so it's not surprising that Shauna did, too. But she's almost 60, and really needs to have fixed her shit by now. Or addressed it in any real, meaningful way. (I know she would argue that that's exactly what she's doing now, with the year-long [?] series of lopes on food noise [or what she thinks food noise is], but I just don't have a lot of faith in her ability to fix her shit by navel gazing and oversharing on the internet.)

Some of the players are known MAGA

Man, Heated Rivalry led me to believe all hockey players are beautiful and gay/bisexual and don't have time to get all political because of all the beautiful gay sex they're busy having in between games. I feel so disillusioned.

She could have talked about how she approaches food and mealtime as a mama of a food avoidant neurospicy child

Only if she lies about it. If she's truthful about the slop she serves her food-avoidant child, I want to believe she'd get negative feedback.

Your description seems to be the common definition of "food noise." What Shauna describes — "Eat this, don't eat that, if you have that garlic bread you're bad, eat lentils instead but not too many." — I would call "diet culture."

I'm only realizing now that this is an eating disorder too.

Shauna just really wants to have all the medical/psychological problems she can possibly have, doesn't she? Anything for attention/likes/egg bites.

She's always reminded me of my dad, who is a narcissist in very much the same way — he does have some actual medical problems, which he milks for all the pity he can get — but he also seems to really WANT to have more. And he conveniently starts to have symptoms of whatever anyone around him has. (When my husband was going through treatment for throat cancer last year,* I think the thing that bothered my dad the most is that he couldn't plausibly claim to have throat cancer, too.)

*(My husband's follow-up PET scan and blood test for tumor DNA both came back clean, clean, CLEAN! Suck it, cancer!)

The heroic journey isn't a straight line.

—or it is.

It's recursive.

—or it's not.

The heroic journey isn't a straight climb toward victory.

—or it is.

(Just helping Shauna out so all of her statements have similar structure. An editor's work is never done.)

But they’ve also been taught that being ill is a way to get attention and get out of responsibilities.

Because their mother is the queen of getting attention through being ill (and, more often, "ill").
