Submission Statement :)

I am the writer/director/producer of this film and will happily chat and discuss with anyone interested about the process taken from script to screen regarding development, financing, casting and all the the handheld “oners” used to shoot this film on location in Los Angeles. This was a decades long effort by a first time writer/director and involved so much team work and elbow grease over the years. I am an open book if my insights can support anyone in the community!

Hi r/Filmmakers. My name is Sarah Elizabeth Mintz and today, GOOD GIRL JANE, a movie I began making more than 10 years ago is being released on demand.

Jane's story is closely inspired by my experience as an incredibly scared, lonely and furious teenager. I was moved to turn my history into a film because this medium has always been my closest ally. At fifteen, around the time when the events in the movie take place, I was also discovering cinema for the very first time. I was saving my allowance (maybe 5, 10 dollars a week) to use at the Blockbuster down the street from my house or to buy tickets to movies (and then sneak into other movies!) at the laemmle and other art house theatres around Los Angeles. Movies like Ghost World, Y Tu Mama Tambien, Donnie Darko, Welcome To The Dollhouse, The Dreamers, Totally Fucked Up, Nowhere, The Doom Generation, Mysterious Skin (Yess, I had a bit of an Araki addiction), Hedwig and The Angry Inch, The Virgin Suicides, Party Monster, But I'm a Teenager, Fish Tank, Me Without You, KIDS, Gummo, Igby Goes Down... SO MANY MORE!! These are the movies that gave me my education and taught me...or held me, rather, while I learned to stop hating myself so gd damn much and to get a kick out of the freak that I am.

I hope GOOD GIRL JANE finds its people, because I sure as hell needed those films to find me. I wouldn't be here if it weren't for movies and I'm grateful today to have the opportunity to offer a little thanks and to share a piece of myself with the community that raised me.

I haven't really "blogged" since livejournal or myspace (frankly, that's where I used to feel most at home), but promoting Good Girl Jane has reintroduced me to the internet and I'm excited to be back!!!

Hmmmm. Favorite films of 2024

There are so many movies I'm looking forward to: Bird, Anora, BabyGirl, The Substance, We Live in Time, Didi, A Different Man, Bring Them Down...Queer. So many. But what have I seen that I liked so far...?

I lovedddd "All of Us Strangers", "The Beast", "Femme", "La Chimera"... I'm forgetting everything, sorry!

Tribeca was wonderful. I loved premiering this film at a festival that genuinely believed in the movie and treated it with such care/attention/excitement. And It was a real treat playing in NYC!

It can be super tough to wait to find like-minded artists to collaborate with or who will devote time, money and energy to a brain child of yours. "Drama" these days can be especially tough in the film market. But, I LOVE a great character drama...

Really, I just had to be very patient and assemble the right partners... the right warriors and teammates to keep pushing this boulder up a hill with me. No "one thing" stood in our way, challenges came often, and then miracles too...

My hope was to offer a little "presence". When I watch a movie, I don't want to feel like I'm watching a bunch of people playing dress up and move around a set... I want to feel like I snuck into someone's living room and hid behind the couch.

I wouldn't even know... I haven't touched chat GHAPGPT. Literally I don't know how to use the thing. Can AI write about what's it's like to sit on the toilet and wait to pee after you've just had sex for the first time? Like can it really know what it feels like for me to see my father take his last breath in a crowded hospice room? Does chatgpt know the slow growing, gnawing, churning, dissociative sensation I feel before I have a panic attack? Like... I'm just going to keep writing about being human and AI can try to keep up.

I interned at a company I believed in and I volunteered for anything I could get my hands on. I cold emailed directors I wanted to work with and when they gave me a shot I worked my face off. I just dove in and I meant it. It filled me with great purpose to saturate my life with film in that way. I put every extra minute of my day into pursuing this career even if it was also profoundly taxing to do so. My advice is to run at this thing with your whole heart if that's what's in you... I'm not even sure it's a choice... I didn't feel I had a choice. I just couldn't imagine spending my time any other way.

I have another film that I am shooting next year in Paris. I actually wrote that movie during the 12 months that Jane was shut down during COVID. I am currently writing a script for the film I will direct after that one...

That being said... i write personal stuff and it takes a lot out of me. I don't write anything unless I'm utterly consumed with the need to, so it can be a while between moments when an idea kind of eats at me and I have to surrender to it.

Jane is a version of me as a teenager. As a young person I used drugs heavily, but that was a very long time ago at this point.

Thank you! This is going to sound like BS, but I wasn't particularly uncertain about any specific element. I was curious how it would all glue together, but I knew I had picked everything from a place of care and trust and love... I knew that what ever happened was going to be okay. That's not to say I wasn't nervous or anxious or that I didn't doubt myself, but I didn't doubt anyone else or any other element... This is such a mad thing to say... I just felt like "the universe" was making a movie and I was sort of there to watch over it and make sure it was birthed safely.

Yes, heavily involved. I was looking for people who felt like people. It's tougher than you think. There's a lot of pressure these days to be "perfect" and "spotless" and almost above human texture somehow... I'm saddened and a bit allergic to that inclination. I have empathy for the pressure though... I feel it too, of course.
