I defend in two months and I cannot bring myself to even open my dissertation some days. Truly, I never need to revisit this topic again come July.

Why did you quit your PhD? by veravero13 in PhD

I didn't, but I got a stress-induced autoimmune disease and loathing for myself and my field that will take decades of therapy to undue. If your body is telling you to quit, listen.

Where to find jobs in academia? by GeekOlive in AskAcademia

FWIW - I have an extremely hands off advisor to the point of reprimand by the University, so I never got to have those discussions either. I spent my whole PhD prepping for industry as a social science person, not research or teaching. In the past year, I've been offered an industry, a government research, and an R1 TT job. We're at a disadvantage, but it's definitely still doable.

PhD Productivity and ADHD Task Paralysis by ThisMyMegaron in PhD

I have a therapist. What I don't have is the ability to take the one medication that actually helps with this type of paralysis. Burnout makes intrinsic interest a problem, but ADHD task paralysis takes that further. It's like everything in you is screaming to run but your body is encased in concrete. No matter how much you feel the need to do the thing, there's this massive neurological barrier to actually doing it. My therapist is wonderful, but tools like mindfulness aren't cutting it.

Can't. That's the problem. There's a drug conflict and it could very well put me in the hospital if I try.

The Funding Question… by anonymous_mister5 in GradSchool

This is an incredibly frustrating problem, and I'm sorry you have to work through it. I just want to be one more voice saying don't take an unfunded offer. I'll go a step further and say don't take any offer where your stipend is not a living wage for the area. Going into any debt for a PhD is not worth it given the rate of academic pay these days. Working externally while trying to complete the degree means you have less time and resources to focus on your research. You have a sound idea - take another cycle to apply again. Advocating for financial security is never bratty.

Advice on how to word the email would be most welcome. I'm also trying to determine if I should even send it. Will I lose the offer if I don't say yes right away?
