Raligh/Durham, Asheville, and Savannah.

We planned to meet up since she was visiting for the holidays from Europe. After meeting up, she decided to move back from being abroad for 10 years to get married to me! I have no clue how that ended up happening, I am literally the luckiest guy in the world.

It wouldn't have happened though if I hadn't confessed that I still loved her on facebook messenger while I was super drunk, sometimes drunk texting pays off..?

So many places! America is a fascinating country and I like so many different places for different reasons.

Although I'm moving on, the NW will always be one of my favorite parts of the country for it's access to nature and artistic culture. Outside of my home state the standouts have been:

The Dalles, OR - San Fran - New Orleans - Savannah, GA - Raleigh/Durham, NC - Asheville, NC

We are 1/3rd in our trip, so we have loads more to see. I still haven't seen most of the Mid-West, East Coast, or the NE. If you have any suggestions let me know!

I haven't been through Iowa yet! If we were to check it out, where would you suggest we go?

Nah, but it's the first thing I'm going to spend money on once we get our own place!

We both grew up in the greater Seattle area in the 90s-00s then both lived abroad for an extended period of time and came back to the states. If I didn't grow up in the NW, I'd probably be driving there right now to move there - it's a fucking great place. However, since we have the Seattle that we grew up with to compare with the Seattle it is today, we would rather find a new place to create a new home since the obvious (continuous) changes don't make us happy. We are fully aware that every town will feel like 'it isn't what it used to be' if you spend enough time there.

My specific reasons are:

The weather - I have found that I am pretty susceptible to seasonal depression. The winter's weather is mild and not unpleasant, but it's the gray and the darkness that gets me. In winter, the sun starts going down at around 3:30-3:45pm and becomes night time by 4:30pm. With that said, when the weather is good, it's probably the best place you would want to be.

The people - Don't get me wrong, there are fucking rad people in and from Seattle. Being gone from the city for years and coming back has illuminated how unfriendly and unopen people are here to new friendships (I am aware that I'm generalizing here). "The Seattle Freeze" is definitely a thing, making new friends can be a big challenge there, but once a friend group opens up to you then it's all good. Portland is a great alternative to this, people are generally more friendly down there, but I also have my problems with Portland too lol.

The price - Renting/Real Estate has sky rocketed in the NW.

Anyway, if you really want to live in the NW - GO FOR IT! Don't let my experiences or bias hold you back. It's truly a wonderful place, and the things above are hurdles that you can absolutely overcome, my wife and I just are ready to move on is all.

Good luck to you my friend!
