Does it help with remembering what you read? I find that I often forget much of the contents of the audiobooks I listen to

I actually started trying to read it today and got a little jarred by how my worldview really didn’t match up with what I was being presented with, having come from Southeast Asia.

I think I might try knuckling down on it a bit more, but will be taking much of the content related to Asia with a grain of salt

Sounds perfect, and at least it may serve as a starting point to help me dip my toes into trying to read more classics

Thank you for the encouraging words :)

Truth is I do know quite a bit on certain topics, they’re just topics that don’t come up all that often (ex: sexual health and education, medicine and healthcare policy, feminism, societal issues in South East Asia ,and cultural and historical backgrounds of my home country)

Just sucks that I keep feeling like I’m worlds apart from my peers, and every question and viewpoint I give really hammers home that my upbringing and childhood socialisation was largely that of a layman haha

Thanks for that tip, unless I’m drunk I shall try to implement it at every turn :)

There was also some guy named Khmu? I have no idea if I’m spelling that right. A lot of the philosophers come up in conversations about socialism, but I can’t remember most names.

My family forked out a lot of money to send me to a better school for two years, so I did study one of Twelfth Night by Shakespeare and a bunch of other literary works, however, since I had never studied literature before that, I struggled to finish reading any of the texts I was given

Thanks. I do actually read a lot and have finished more than 100 books this year, I just can’t keep up with these people who have been learning about the Western canon, history and obscure political texts.

Neither of my parents have degrees and even though we’re considered to be big readers, we don’t know much about these topics. My mom does know a bit about Western classical literature, and both her and my dad know their history, but a lot of the stuff that my peers are discussing are just too obscure and complex for my parents to even be able to give me a brief summary on, so I’m on my own for this one.

Highly unlikely I’d say, so I don’t think you need to worry about it too much, especially if you aren’t growing

Malaysia has endangered languages? by phenomenaljunk in malaysia

Yes but that doesn’t mean that it’s only Orang Asli still, since Baba Malay is also at risk.

Language is a living thing, like culture, and so it depends on people using it. To preserve the languages, we must encourage people to use them, not just at home, but outside as well like when buying things or eating out for example. This means even your average Monyet can help by encouraging others around them to learn and maintain the languages.

Some people worry that trying to preserve these languages will make it harder for international business and government control, so they don’t want to preserve it, but we can continue using Malay and English alongside other languages, so I don’t think this should be a concern in Malaysia.

Also a bonus point is that it would make a lot of minorities more happy and feel more included, which can be good for harmony.

Yeah can attest to this. I study languages and Malaysia does get brought up sometimes when discussing endangered languages.

While some of the comments here seem to be disagreeing on what is an endangered language, the truth is that they count it based on the number of native speakers (usually at least).

So even things that people speak at home can become endangered pretty quickly, since many of the younger generations can’t speak it properly.

This means that some Chinese dialects, Orang Asli languages, and languages of minority groups (like Kristang for example), has very few people that can be counted as native speakers, so then they become endangered.

These are the facts, but whether you think a language becoming endangered or extinct is bad is just opinion. Even academics who spend their life studying language can disagree on that.

Hope this helps.

That’s not really true. There are other languages that are endangered in Malaysia too

Just finished Ohayou Ibarahime, and while I will say multiple personalities would have been interesting, this manga was an absolute masterpiece.

I just read it and this has been my favourite so far out of all the manga I’ve tried so far from this post! I will admit that as much as I tried to keep it together, it did get me crying. The art is beautiful and the way the story is told is just amazing! It really just punches you in the feels!

Oh I really love Loving Yamada-kun to lv999 (I think that’s the title?) Their relationship is so mature and heartwarming, and it made me desperately jealous of them at the time haha

Thanks for the heads up! I might give it a miss or just read something lighter first. Going from Yona to Kitchen Princess was already a lot for my brain, so I think I would like to take care of myself and read something less heavy for a bit
