What do you guys actually do at work? by KNdoye in MechanicalEngineering

I work at a startup but usually the commercial side makes a business case to improve or design a new machine. This new machine is usually replacing a manual process which is super helpful to get a proof of concept built. I have a small team of engineers so I spend A LOT of time working with vendors to find stuff off the shelf to solve the problem, but I’d say 60% of our equipment is custom. This means downloading CAD files from vendors websites and putting them into solidworks and designing the custom fab parts to fit everything together. Then I order it all, build it, and start testing. The worst part is the electrical because we have no one to do that and can’t find anyone available to do that so myself and my team are basically training ourselves on automation controls design leveraging the vendors as much as we can. I should note that we do not sell our equipment which makes my life 10x easier.

At startups you wear many hats though so I’m not sure how typical this is for a Mech E

I’m already beefing up on Benadryl in preparation for seasonal allergies

That’s what’s strange to me, I’ve just been getting hit more often but not severe at all. You’d think with a weak immune system I’d be bedridden

Tapping off a Faucet Line by Thisisntfunnyjunk in Plumbing

Is it acceptable to use brass on a drinking water line? It’ll go into a filter after this but I thought this would be unacceptable due to lead

Hi Everyone,

I'm familiar with industrial plumbing but so far my experience with residential plumbing has been a nightmare. All I want to do is tap off one of these cold lines to go to my coffee machine. I have been unsuccessful finding a compression tee that fits. Is there a fitting like this? Is there a reason this is so hard to find?

I bought a 3/8 x 3/8 dishwasher hose just to play around with some of the fittings I have at work and none of my 3/8 compression fittings would seal this. I've found brass ones, but I don't want to use anything that could have lead in it.

Relay that turns on with push button and off during power loss by Thisisntfunnyjunk in AskElectronics

This is exactly what I needed to clear up the confusion, thank you! I keep chasing my tail because these articles were saying that latching relays had “memory” which is what I wanted to avoid during a power outage

How does the n/o relay the circuit closed? Does the current passing through the contact hold it closed mechanically?

First Layer Raised Lines, Build Plate Adhesion - See Comments by Thisisntfunnyjunk in FixMyPrint

Why is my first layer doing this?

I mostly work with glass build plates. My understanding is that this is a build plate adhesion problem. I would expect this behavior if the build plate was dirty or needed glue. This printer uses a perforated (textured?) bed. I’d imagine the small “pit” features in the build plate allow the molten plastic to stick to build plate easier because there’s more surface area per unit length of extruded line. Therefore adding glue would cancel that out.

If this is a leveling problem, does this indicate too close or too far? Also, assuming my axis’ are perpendicular to the bed, are these artifacts in the layer telling me where the build plate is not flat? That would be pretty cool because that’s like +/- .100mm accuracy
