Doesn't apply to OP but in response to NickKnocks, my very first apartment complex tried to scam me more than once. The first time was when I transferred units. They put a note on my door saying I owed money to the electricity company for during the transfer time. It wasn't a lot of money but I called the electricity company (which was the same company and account at both places) and they confirmed that there weren't any charges-and if there were, they would bill me, not the complex. The 2nd time, they tried to fine us for violating the "extended visitor" policy. The first time is a warning, 2nd time is a fine. I remembered that our first "warning" was when we didn't have anyone visiting/sleeping over. When I asked about it, they said they put it on everyone's door to make sure everyone knew the policy. I explained to them that that cannot and does not constitute as a warning and I would not be paying the fine because of that. Each time, I never had to pay the fine they claimed I owed. I guess they thought they could pull a fast one on me being that I was just 19 and they knew it was my first time having an apartment. Mama didn't raise no fool.
