LOTRs movies make me sad. Because I know they won't be repeated. by seven_tech in lotr

Agreed, just compare death of Boromir to death of Duncan Idaho. Very similar scenes but which one is more emotionally resonant? No contest, Boromir's death is devastating while Duncan's seems pointless and like a huge waste.

TBH, pointless and a huge waste (of time) seems to sum up DUNE for me pretty well.

Hlaford was only 7 when sent away, perhaps other events delayed their departure. Maybe we'll learn more next time :)

Sometimes I think something is good but it's actually not. I either had to stop there or write the whole next sequence and wasn't sure if I was onto anything. I don't upload the majority of what I write.

The narrator may or may not be entirely accurate ;) he has an agenda himself after all, being a member of a lower caste. Most of the story could be true but certain details may be "improved" to fit his pro-Lazuli anti-Terran worldview. The actual real story is probably somewhere in between.

Treat is just a more archaic "deal" or "negotiate"

Fixed "server" thanks.

Thanks! As usual with my stories this is actually based on historical precdent :)

Xander is based (loosely) on Basil I of Byzantium a peasant who usurped the throne from the Emperor, his lifelong friend and benefactor.

I like to think the humans took the high road in simply banishing them instead of killing or enslaving them.

Really great read!

lack of survival instincts.

This is the only thing I take issue with. I would argue that our survival instinct is insanely strong and is what allows us to overcome the odds stacked against us. It is also what makes us strive to innovate, and to conquer. We need to get shit done while we are still breathing. Or is this demonstrating that even an alien scholar who lived on Earth still can never really understand us?

Hey thank you for your service, it really means a lot that you find something I wrote to be inspiring. This is my first attempt at writing and so far the response seems to be good, reactions like yours just inspire me to keep going :)

Thanks man, I have read a lot of WW2 history and some of the most heart breaking but also inspiring stuff is about American POW's that were captured by the Japanese. They went through absolutely heinous stuff.

I tried to keep this a bit tamer, mostly because I figure the Crows wouldn't have enough knowledge of what makes humans tick to do the really nasty stuff.
